If so...was it any better than what you could do at home?

Once I was tempted for a pedicure. Once.

No, the closest that I came to that was visiting a barber shop that advertised a "hot lather razor finish", where they lathered my neck and proceeded to cut me so that I bled all over my collar. I did not go back. I never wanted a straight razor held to my throat by a stranger.

When I was in the AF the barbers would finish your haircut with a straight razor on the back of your neck. I was all that, IMO.
Never had a face shave, as such.

It wasn't as thorough as last season's bikini wax ................but the zen master's flashing blade handled every wrinkle in the procedure like a Benihana shrimp slasher.

That is exactly the way my hometown barber finished my haircuts every time. I thought it was way cool. I’d like to try a professional straight razor shave in an old school barber shop just once before I’m gone.

"old school barber shop" whew!
I thought I read "old barber school". Prolly not the best place to get a razor shave by a newbie...

Not me. I view shaving as an inconvenience, not an experienced to be enjoyed.

Just the back of the neck and that was only from one guy.
Truefitt & Hill make high end shaving cream and have a team of hotties that give facial shaves.

When I was growing up our barber would even up my sideburns by applying warm lather and a straight razor. But only maybe 3/4" got straight-razor shaved on each side. This only started when I was maybe 13.

I had a shave and a facial as well as an upper-body massage every time I got a haircut in Korea. Better than a do-it-yourself shave? Oh yeah. The "barber ladies" wanted to stay on my good side as I was the camp's medical honcho. Maybe it was enhanced by the apricot facial goop they applied followed by a steaming hot towel. To finish it off all the ladies were involved in giving me a neck/shoulder/upper back massage. My arms were so loose it felt like my knuckles were dragging on the grass when I walked back to my aid station afterwards.
Oh, yeah--we were talking about professional shaves. Totally wonderful and never a nick

We would do 10 - 14 day trips fishing from Esbjerg in the late 70's and after landing, cleaning the boat down and getting paid the crew would head for the local baths, this was a place where they had showers, a wet steam room, a sauna and a small ice cold swimming pool. The tradition was that we took a case of beer in with us which the old guy who worked there would put into the cooler and get really, really cold ready for when finished.
First you went into the showers and washed of a fortnights sweat etc then entered the wet room for as long as you could stand it and ditto with the sauna. When you were as hot as you could take it you came out of the sauna and jumped into the ice cold pool then go into the dressing room to dry off and the old fella would bring in the ice cold beer. We would sit for a while cooling off with a beer or two then get dressed say our goodbyes and split up till it was time to sail again, usually 3 - 4 days later.
Across the road from the baths was a gents hairdresser and as I had really long hair as was fashionable at the time I would go in and get a haircut or trim. The barber also did cut throat razor shaves and the first time I went there he said I should try one as coming straight from the bathhouse my pores would be open and very amenable to a close shave. As I had only ever used safety razors I said okay, go ahead. Without a doubt the best shave I had ever had up until then and this became my tradition all the years I fished over there and I also introduced a good few of my friends to it as well.

The only professional face shave I ever had was at a little barber shop by the Mediterranean, at Olu Deniz in Turkey. At the end they burned off any fine hair on your ears with a flaming ball of cotton wool (soaked in methylated spirit) on a string.

When I was in Iraq the local barbers that set up shop on base did hot lather shaves with a straight razor, used a tiny alcohol torch to burn the hair off your ears (not enough to give the sensation of being burned, it just felt warm) and even gave you a back/neck and scalp massage after they were done.
It was pretty cool. A guy I worked with went and got his head hot lather shaved every week.

In his early days, my friend the barber used to shave the back of my neck with a straight razor. I don't know when he stopped but I haven't seen him use it for probably 20 years. I wonder if the barber's code, or health code banned them.

I figure after 52 years of shaving I am a professional at shaving my own face. Like most of us older fellers here I’ve had the razor trim around the ears and back of the neck as that used to be as ubiquitous as the leather strop hanging from the chair and the blue alcohol solution with combs, razor, etc. (I miss that).

I would not be able to have someone shave me with a straight razor. I'm just a litte too skittish for that. I would not be able to have a chiro give me an adjustment either.

Yes. Many times. I used to travel to Asia on business about 3 times a year for quite a few years. A few of the women barbers I still keep in touch with after 35 years.
