I was sitting at a red light listening to the radio. All of a sudden a pretty good sized hawk swooped down across my hood. I looked to my right and saw it snag a rodent by a bush.
It calmly flew away with his breakfast. It was really a pretty cool thing to see.

A blue heron has been hunting ground squirrels in the pasture just up the road that I walk past with the dogs every morning. I first saw one doing this a few years ago. Prior to that, I had always thought of them as wading/fishing birds, not dry-land hunters. I guess that, like many other predators, they are opportunists who will snag a meal whenever/wherever they can find one.
We also have many red-tail hawks and owls of various types in the area. Then , of course, there are the crows and ravens: the ultimate opportunists. They seem to get by mostly on scavenging and robbing the nests of smaller birds.

Running a Bush Hog on a tractor in Florida I used to see herons and egrets in the fields picking up bugs, mice, voles, and small snakes. I once saw a great blue heron with a rat snake about 24" long wrapped around the bird's neck. The snake wasn't getting eaten, and it also was not letting go anytime soon. A classic Mexican standoff.

You made me think of a lyric from James McMurtry's song "Good Life", Peegoo:
"Grandpa died back in '85, Now they won't let Grandma drive
Bankers took everything he made
He lost his fingers to a Bush Hog blade
But he led a good life (he told me so)
Yeah, he led a good life"
