Hi All. I am a newbie here. Thought I would create a thread. IMHO The Yardbirds are one of the most underappreciated bands in history. This being said I wanted to see if anyone here ever saw them live?

I don't think they're underappreciated by those who know. I was a big fan as a kid and have their early albums. One could say they evolved into Led Zeppelin even though it was only one Yardbird that created the band.

Yeah -- I'd say "underappreciated" is a little strong, but I've always wondered why some of their best songs "Heart Full of Soul" or "Evil Hearted You" have not been covered more by other bands over the years. I know there have been covers -- but not many.

Love the Yardbirds. Kind of the British equivalent of Buffalo Springfield or something, for the superstars it spawned.

Saw the Yarbirds live at The Blue Village teen club in Westmont Illinois during their Jimmy Page era. Great band. Saw Deep Purple there too.

The audience in that scene kills me. They stand like bored zombies throughout the performance, then go insane over a piece of broken guitar.

I saw them about 10 years ago at a festival outside of San Francisco. Kind of sad, only Jim McCarty the drummer was an original member. He sang on one or two songs, but it was more like watching a decent tribute band.
Agreed, they took music into a bunch of new, creative directions- eastern modes, rave-ups, psychedelic, Gregorian chant with Jeff; then they became the hothouse for the seeds of Led Zep when Pagey joined.

Thanks for the responses. I listen to Little Steven's Underground Garage a lot and I heard some of their stuff recently and it regenerated my interest.

I love these guys, every version. Solid groovin' British band, with three unique scorching lead guitarists over the years. Eric Clapton on the Telecaster was red hot....."I Wish You Would," hoooodoggies! Jeff Beck redefined lead guitar on the Fender Esquire on the song "The Train Kept a Rollin'." And then Jimmy Page goes and plays bizarro fantastic stuff all over the album "Little Games".....on the Telecaster Jeff Beck gave to him. Yes, it's true.....I worship this band.

Huge fan from the get go. They did an album maybe 10-15 years ago with a bunch of guest pickers, including some alumni called Birdland. Get it,turn it up, you's can thank me later.

When I subscribed to Columbia House (Columbia Record Club) in decades past, there were selling a Yardbirds compilation and advertising them as having had Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page in the band. A person who did not know better might think they were all in the band at the same time, which was certainly not the case.
Yeah, I know, one cut (I think "Happenings 10 Years Time Ago") had Beck and Page on twin lead guitars after Page moved from bass, but I think that was a one-off.

BTW, I loved the movie Blowup. Interesting suspense movie from Britain in the 60s. Some bad acting and hokey scenes but the plot is good.

Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page also played together on "Psycho Daisies," the B-side to "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago."

I saw them with Page also, when he played his Teley with a violin bow. Mt Holly 1967 or 68? Holly Michigan

Adding: I was a huge Paul Samwell-Smith fan and was disappointed when Cris Dreja was playing bass that night, Paul was replaced by Jimmy Page , but I don't recall if he started on bass and then moved to guitar or that was the plan all together ( to play lead)

They came thru my area (San Leandro, Bay Area Ca) back in 66 or 67. My parents wouldn’t let me go but a friend got to attend. He said that Jeff Beck turned up sick for the gig but the bass player moved over to guitar and on they went. Jimmy Page, of course.

There are some folks that know a little bit about music that tend to agree the Yardbirds were no flash in the pan band.
This is interesting and entertaining:
