Wife and I watched this on TV...it sold at the Meacham Auction in Kissimmee Florida..
the paint job is worn but the motor still sounds as good as it did in the movie...
I'm curious if Leno was the high bidder....

That's a lot of money for a beat up Mustang.
I saw a story about it on Youtube (I think it was on Jay Leno's garage maybe?) and the owner was showing it to the interviewer. It's in ROUGH shape.
I guess I'm too young to appreciate the star value of it, or maybe because I prefer the '69-70 body style, but that car doesn't do much for me, and I consider myself a Mustang guy. I've owned 7 of them ranging from 1965 to 2010.
*shrugs*

I can't believe it looks as good as it does or that no one tried to steal it....

I’m not surprised it went for so much. The story alone , someone was going to cough up that kind of money. Plus the publicity that car has received in the press was going to attract a lot of attention. When I set off my search for a classic car, it was the mustang that I looked at first, but in the end I’m just an old Olds guy anyways and ended up with the car in my avatar. Some day I might look for a mustang.

He's lucky it never walked off.

"That's a lot of money for a beat up Mustang."
If it were a beat-up Mustang that never left West Virginia and had been bought and sold a few times, perhaps. But this is a car that is a cultural icon.
Back in 2004 a beat-up *parts caster* cobbled together from three different Fender Stratocasters from the late 50s sold for $960K, which is a lot of money for a beat-up Strat that's not even factory assembled. But because Eric Clapton played it, many bidders thought it was a good investment.
Many folks are happy to pay a high price for nostalgia. It's like buying a trip in a time machine.

So after watching the auction, I'm convinced that the steering wheel on the Mustang in the movie was that of a stock 68...and not the one in the car presently...so to satisfy my curiosity...(I'll be up all night unless I know the truth!), the wife and I are watching the DVD.. that being said, there were actually 2 Mustangs used in the movie...so who knows..
I'll post when I know more...stay tuned!

Do not forget to count the number of times Steevo passes the VW beetle in the chase scene through city streets.

Oh I get that, and I agree, but like I mentioned, the star power means almost nothing to me, so it remains a beat up Mustang to me. But admittedly I'm not the target buyer. Now, if it was the Sheepdog van from Dumb and Dumber for sale, then we're talking something up my alley!

Well, it is the GOM====God's Own Mustang. If I was rich beyond belief then I would own it. Period. I have never seen another that compares.

I owned and totaled a 66 fastback with the same drab green paint. They must have used that shade for many years.

I have a cigarette butt from the ashtray of the Steve McQueen Mustang. Let the bidding start at $750,000.

Ah, the house one could live in and cars and boats and lets not forget the guitars for $3.4 million. I forgot, how I could anonymously help someone in need out. Oh well, dream over...back to reality

I had a buddy in high school who bought a 1968 Mustang GT500KR convertible (in the late 70's). He said there were only a couple hundred of them made that year. Always have wondered what he did with it....

In 1968 drove from upstate NY to Key West Fla in my buddy's green 68 GT. Great trip, car handled flawlessly. Even had a .......CB radio in it.

From what I read elsewhere, the owner was hoping to get at least $5MM for the car. It's possible he's sorry he got talked into selling at no reserve.

Always liked that color with those rims. But for me...gimme a Boss 351, probably the best overall vintage Mustang.

My "You just won the lotto" list of Mustangs include:
1970 Boss 429 1986 SVO 2004 Terminator One the the new GT350s with the flat plane Voodoo engine
I blame the movie "Gone in Sixty Seconds" and all of the doofuses building Eleanor clones for burning me out of the 67-68 body. For a while there you couldn't go to a car show without seeing one.

There's been several newer ones that are outstanding, but the prices are silly. I wish the Boss 429 had lived up to it's hype, I'd prefer a Boss 351.

I wish the Boss 429 had lived up to it's hype, I'd prefer a Boss 351. I meant to tell you, good choice! I like the Boss 351 as well. The Boss 429 casts a huge shadow, mostly just because of it's size IMO, but the Boss 351 pretty much could run circles around one in speed, handling, braking. I like the looks better too. You don't hear a lot about the Boss 351 overall compared to most other big hype Mustangs. Might be because it was a 1971 one year and 1971 was a death blow for many muscle cars. Reminds me of the Pontiac 455 Super Duty 1973/74. Likely Pontiac's best ever street motor, but again, due to it being a "smogger" folks tended to overlook them versus earlier ones like RA-IV and such. 455 SD heads were the best flowing stock issued Pontiac head ever available, even the uber rare RA-V could not flow as well. And the oft overlooked Buick GS 455 Stage I & rare 455 Stage II were among the fastest muscle cars of the era hands down. Sorry for straying from the topic at hand.
