Here we go. -35C and dropping. This will last for a week. A fine time to have a busted oil furnace and a "hobby" wood stove as the only heat source on the rental side of our duplex. Best burn we can get out of the little bugger is about 6.5 hours when it's choked down, less with the damper out. Clearance from bottom of floor joists to top of backfill is about 12" I'm a skinny old weasel so I was able to get under the building doing a bit of excavating when needed and place heaters set to keep things just above 0 near the pipes closest to the footing. Keeping the underside warm is not a problem with oil as there are no cold air return ducts, just grates on the floor....the whole underbelly is a giant plenum. If I use the furnace fan (that part works) it sucks so much heat that the wee stove is even less adequate. New stove will be installed on the 20th, until then it's touch and go. If we loose the pipes next door it's disaster, the floor will have to be ripped up to get at them. Yes....we bought this place on purpose... cheers 'n chills

It's feast or famine when it comes to the weather, O my Canadian Brother. Here in the DC area it is going to be 70 degrees today...on the 11th of January.
Perhaps instead of building international pipelines to transport oil, maybe a few huge HVAC ducts running north and south. We could be sending you some balmy air right now.
Keep the fires burnin' and yer powder dry.

On the cold weather topic. In Inuvik, all buildings are on stilts to prevent permafrost from thawing. There are two exceptions, the hospital, and the "Rec Center". In both cases there is a refrigeration system that circulates some kind of coolant (don't know how it's accomplished) under the structures to keep the permafrost frozen. All utilities (sewer and water, and in some cases heat) are above ground contained in heated corridors called "utilitors" And I think my life is complicated...:>)
In the summer book-ending the solstice, the sun never sets, and it's hotter than hell. cheers

3 degrees F in Taos, NM this morning. Over the other side of the mountain in Angel Fire, it is minus 9 F. Nothing too unusual for this time of year. We get most of our heat from solar. Which works great.

Looks like -44C tonight. -47.2 F
If the pipes on the rental side hold, I'd say things are bullet proof. Haven't had an overnight low like what's pending for years. Brrrr
