It’s a long story of the pervasiveness of incompetence in higher ed, but I now own my first Mac. A refurbished MacBook Pro. Credit to fkaJimmySee for remembering to consider refurbished. Saved $300 and you’d never know it wasn’t new.
i5, 8gb ram, 256g solid state, Touch Bar. Set up tonight, first thing that goes in tomorrow is boot camp and Windows 10, which is a hint about the higher ed reference. I just chewed up perfectly good guitar money to buy a computer to support my Mac using students because IT is a decade behind in proper remote access to programs that do not run on MacOS.

I never heard of boot camp so I looked it up. Pretty cool!

Maybe a month ago, I replaced my second notebook, the extra I carry for travel, with a refurb MacBook Air, nearly fully tricked out -- i5 10th gen processor, 16 gig RAM, 2 TB solid state drive, but no Touch Bar .
Also got a refurb. A great deal for a great system. My previous second chair, an i5 MacBook just did not have the horsepower to do photo work.

Being near a city with the tech and colleges Boston has does have some perks.
I went to Micro Center, basically a haven for computer nerds. It’s in Cambridge, unsurprisingly close to MIT

Congrats!
I went the same route at the end of last year. I probably went a bit older than most. I bought a refurbed 2014 MBP, quad core i7, 16gb RAM, 512GB SSD. So far, so good.
My photography involves RAW processing, and it’s been great for that.
