Here is a question I received on eBay today concerning the Fuji X100f I have listed there (also here) and my response.
eBay is far from perfect, but once I list there, I do not expect people to contact me through eBay suggesting we circumvent eBay.
Any similar experiences?
Hey there,
I'm also located in Massachusetts right in foxboro! Do you think it would be possible to do a Craigslist type deal and meet up outside of eBay. I'd just like to check out the camera in person before I buy if possible. I can bring cash so you don't have to deal with fees on ebay. Let me k…
I’m sorry, but contacting me through eBay to “do a Craigslist thing outside of eBay” probably violates our agreements with eBay.
If I wanted to take the time to drive 35 miles to meet a stranger who will then kick the tires one my camera, offer me 2/3 of the minimum bid price and sweeten the offer with “I have cash.” I would have listed it on eBay and enjoyed this experience multiple times in the last week.

I too play by the rules with eBay listings. Weasel is a good term for whoever it is you are dealing with.

Sounds like a not good deal to me. Too far to go for one thing.

Some people think the rules they've agreed to don't apply to them. You did the right thing to avoid this buyer. I might be inclined to forward a copy of the correspondence to eBay's compliance office (or whatever they call it), not that they'd do anything about it.

Even if you agreed to his proposal. You meet and all your conditions are met without any compromise. You will have still lost in the eyes of the universe.

First, it is wrong. Second, if I was “morally flexible” the odds are that you’re a wanker who’s going to waste my time and lowball me as if I’m a junkie trying to pawn my TV for my next fix.

I'd also say no.

Not to mention, eBay does monitor those messages and you could get suspended. I got a warning once just from someone trying to get me to do that and me saying no. Took several phone calls to get the warning removed.

I've experienced this more and more on my ebay listings. I always decline and tell the requestor "I'll let auction run its course".
I am transitioning to Reverb for guitars, amps, and gear. In fact, just last night, I sold two loopers in less than two hours after listing. I got a fair price and didn't have to wait for a three or five- day auction to run it's course.

Yeah, it's strictly spelled out in the policy. There's a place to report that also.

You get a variation of this on Reverb, too. You list an item and accept offers. Someone messages you with their offer. They could *make* an offer (using the offer function) and send you the same message. But when an proper offer is made, it also notifies others who are watching the item that someone did so.
I've taken to replying to such messages that I only work through Reverb's offer function. It's funny how many times the person doesn't extend a formal offer.

I have had similar issues with Craigslist, I'm done. Tired of people offering 50% of asking price, want me to jump through their hoops just for them to not show or call at pre- arranged meeting.

CL around here is dead. I don't even bother.
The market is way too small.

I don’t know if this would be “weaseling”, but, through EBay I contacted the seller of an item with a Buy It Now price and asked if they would take the amount I offered for the item. The seller lowered the BIN price and notified me when that was completed. I then purchased the item.

As long as the eventual sale is made on eBay, you're all good.
