I have a very old Samsung Android 3G cell phone and it seems to be incredibly fickle sometimes to send simple text messages. Measuring signal strength from essentially the same place can get 113dBm 0asu to -95dBm 9asu (-107dBm 3asu may be typical) and from zero connection to 1, 2, 3 or even rarely 4 bars of signal strength, all from the very same spot sometimes within moments.
Many times text messages will send quickly, but other times it takes a few tries and, on occasion it will take perhaps 20 to 60 minutes or more just to send a two or three letter text like "Ok" or "Yes". It appears to simply refuse to send the text and it seems to have not so much to do with the signal strength. It just says "Failed" and I have to touch the "Re-Send" button.
The signal strength meter doesn't always match up exactly with the dBm or ASU readings either and messages will send quickly at zero bars but NOT send at 3 bars or 9asu or 95dBm. The signal strength can vary considerably from the exactly same spot in my dwelling, again, sometimes from moment to moment.
It can be beyond infuriating. So what's up with all that ?

You know they’re shutting down 3G... 3G? Time for a new phone. Yep! 3G is a relic of the past. Get a new phone and enjoy everything it has to offer

If you get yourself a modern iPhone, you'll be welcomed into the bosom of the everchanging update crowd. This is where your IOS is up to date when you sit down to dinner, but obsolete by the time the dishes are done.

Lol 😂 From the standpoint of a new one every 8 -14 months Does feel that way but most Apple products are good from an operational standpoint of 3-5 years. It is a bit disheartening that your cool new and expensive phone or iPad is now 2nd chair to the new boy on the block in 8-14 months. Many times before one gets it paid for. Apple seems to have started their next incarnation before the latest becomes available to the public 🙄😉

I never get upset by that, as the new model generally makes the older one, which is often just as functional, more affordable. That’s why I chose the iPhone XR over the 11 back in March. Saved myself $600. I’m not one of those people who needs the newest and best.

No cache to clear in this case and things will be fine a bit later from the exact same spot. The really bad failures to send a text message don't happen very often, but they are aggravating when do happen and seem to have no identifiable reason at all. This is in the Chicago suburban metro area so coverage must be a solid blanket.
Hmmm, I didn't know 3G was going away and it still is in use around here at this point, so I don't think that could be a cause.
In any case, no Apple iPhone for me ever as I am not in agreement at all with their philosophy. Even with a new Android phone, I would want to do as much as I can to be in control of updates and other software decisions, if that's possible. I use my desktops and laptops for on-line and computer stuff and pictures are nearly always with my DLSR, so the phone would generally be voice and text.

I was having similar problems. A friend who works for Sprint had me do something that made it work much better. Let me see if I can find the instructions....

I just looked it up, and it appears that 3G will sunset by or in 2022.

I just bought a refurbed Samsung Galaxy S9+. After being an iPhone user for the last 4 years I'm going to have to learn the Android thing all over again. Not looking forward to it. I started using an iPhone because that's what the place I used to work for used when they handed out company phones. I dropped my iPhone a few days ago and broke the screen for the second time in as many months. The camera also stopped working so I upgraded to a phone with more memory and that will be more app friendly than the Apple stuff.

But, but that evil 5G stuff is spread by Bill Gates flying around in jets releasing it in contrails, all over everybody, so that he can rule the world!
I actually get such facebook posts from a demented relative.

Thanks, guys for those tips. Hmm, well, 2 years is about 2 years away ...... so then it certainly WILL be new phone time ! In the meantime, it would be interesting to find out why I would have these occasional complete "failures to send". I believe back a couple months ago, the T-Mobile network (and perhaps others) apparently suffered a widespread failure over a couple of days and I don't know if it was explained publicly to everyone's satisfaction.
I have heard the rumor, that possibly in times of a riot or civil unrest (gee, any of those lately ?) that authorities might disrupt or shut down cell phone communications to prevent co-ordination among troublemakers or texting up "flash-mob" actions to overwhelm local L.E.
Since I haven't been masterminding revolutions or riots, that can't be my phone problem !

I wonder what kind of "warning" we'll get ... either a "We'll be changing over to 4G/5G so you'll have to update your phone" OR (as would be my luck) having to call AAA for a tow only to find that the phone no longer works lol

This is where your IOS is up to date when you sit down to dinner, but obsolete by the time the dishes are done. My wife has had an iPhone for nearly a year. She still hasn't figured it out yet but was comfortable with all her previous Androids. And she expects me to figure out everything on it. Something always goes AWOL after an iOS update. My 5 year-old Moto E low-end burner needs to be retired. It has the same memory capacity of a fruit fly. Looks like I will be using a second-hand Android 7 phone soon.

I went from an Android to an iPhone and never looked back. I found the iPhone to be much more user friendly. Stuff on the Android was hard to figure out, while on iOS everything seems to just work like you would think it should.

I'm a cheapskate from way back, I guess. I simply cannot force myself to pay more for a phone that I did for this computer. I know there's extra convenience involved but I only use the phone to ...errr.... what is it again? ..oh yeah .... make phone calls.

Stuff on the Android was hard to figure out, while on iOS everything seems to just work like you would think it should. I surrendered my Motorola flip phone when I sat down behind the controls of the iPhone 4, back in the days of yore. For me, iOS has been a first water mystery from the very beginning. Tap, siwipe, touch, poke, slide, pinch .... unlike y'all, I frequently find myself in the Land of the Lost. Can't tell you how many times I have sat before my computer, typing "how do I (do whatever) on my iPhone7...?" For instance: I have my phone set to keep all text messages for one year. Yesterday I got done sending a text, and then accidentally touched .... something .... instantly I was transported to the top of end of 500 messages, with no way back except to fick, flick, flick, until I was back to today. This happens every couple of days. For me, the iPhone, impressive as it is, might as well be one of those TV remote controls, where I use three buttons that are nestled among a minefield of dozens, which serve no purpose I can discern. Except to end my evening entertainment, because I inadvertently bumped one of the danger zone buttons. And now I am seeing a display on the TV like, "you have activated sleep setting 4A potsticker. Betcha weren't expecting that, were you?"

I played with an Iphone back in the day and found it cumbersome. I then tried an android.

A cool feature is to swipe left until you go past your last page and it will show all your apps if you have so many things in a multitude of folders and can’t remember where you put an app. Yes it saved this old fart! 😂😂😂😂😂 And on my iPad Pro there ate special new features I like

Once upon a time, iPhone let me store my pictures just as I took them. Newest first, then back to the beginning of time.
Now, its little brain constantly comes up with new ways to shuffle the pictures around into categories that are of no use to me. Off the top of my head, iPhone offers:
"Pictures taken with the sun behind you.
Pictures taken with the letter "D" in the foreground.
Pictures where someone in a group shot has a receding hairline.
Pictures taken on Thursdays.
Pictures I have automatically cropped for you to focus on a dog in the background taking a dump.
All the embarrassing photos you thought had been deleted, including your thumb on the lens, your blurred face because you had reversed the view, that hot chick in the produce section squeezing melons. I have them all. Upgrade to IOS 14 or you'll wake one morning to find Steve Jobs's head next to you in bed."
