I have a situation on a new guitar where the high E string is just a shade too close to the edge of the fretboard, noticeable if I am pulling off on the E string on the 3rd fret - I will drag it down a fraction and it will slip off the fret. Even a little bit of a sloppy open D chord might cause it to pull down off the 2nd fret.
I have measured and the string distance is about .5mm closer to the edge of the neck than my other guitars (and an identical model of the same guitar) - i think the nut was cut just a shade too far out. I don't have a local luthier capable of this type of work - so I am considering sending it back to Sweetwater to ask them to put in a new nut on with it cut a little... well a little further away from the edge (for lack of a better way to describe it).
I've spend about an hour putting the guitar through it's paces and boy it seems like a keeper except this issue. An obvious (and valid) question may be: 'why not just send it back and have them send you another one?'. This is eminently reasonable and in fact 100% the logical thing to do. However, I have been seeking for my 'forever' SG and part of that is a pretty specific color. The new SG's are generally very light cherry with an almost orange tint to them. Lovely but not what I have in my mind. I found one that actually has a more traditional, darker red stain. Just luck of the draw but I found one. It's just .5mm from being exactly what I want. (well, being honest there are these $5k VOS finish version that is EXACTLY what I want but...no. Just no.)
So a few questions for the brain trust:
1. Does this sounds like a plan with reasonable chance for success? If I describe the symptom is it possible for them to work with this kind of precision to make a new nut adjusted about .5mm?
2. Bone or graph tech? (or is this a maple v. rosewood situation?)
thoughts?
