I'm GASing for a Boss RE-20 but I already have a Dawner Prince Boonar (Echorec clone). Is there enough difference between an RE-201 Space Echo style and Echorec style to justify me purchasing an RE-20?

The RE-20 does one thing and one thing exceedingly well (to a point I rarely fire up my actual tape Space Echo any more).
This includes the preamp, which if you love, you love. If you don't love, there's no turning it off, period.
The particular thing of the Space Echo versus the Binson (since I haven't played a Dawner, nor any of the clones, but had an Echorec at my disposal for a while) is the almost "mastering sheen" of the Space Echo - both to the stock guitar signal and the echoes themselves.
It's far mroe integral to teh sound than the vaunted EP-3 pre-amp in teh Echoplex, as an example.

Thanks reverendrob. Sounds interesting. I found a video that goes for over an hour that contains a direct comparison between the Boonar and RE-20. I'll give that a shot and see how I go.
I've read many conflicting reports that the RE-20 is an almost perfect replication of the RE-201 (I'm thinking maybe 90% there) or it sounds digital (especially the reverb). I have a FRV-1 pedal with the same COSM technology as the RE-20. Many claim it's an accurate replication of the original Fender Reverb Unit. If that was the case, I'd never buy an original Unit because the FRV-1 has a nasty metallic side to it which always puts me off the pedal. Do you have any opinions about the RE-20 reverb?

i have both the FRV-1 and the RE-20 - the FRV saved me from buying a spring tank for what I want that for.
The 201 is very, very, very good - the one thing it can't do versus mine is the 'my erase heads are tweaked to only wipe about 90%' so there's always a sound on sound of a minor background chaos going on, but no digital is going to get that.
It's a case of 'if you love it, you'll be happy', if you don't, well they have good resale still (and the FRv-1 attests, well, they now sell for a ton more than when new!)
I'm just not a 'must have Echorec", or I'd look at various ones. I am, hoever, a "must have Space Echo"

Thanks again Rev. I managed to play an RE-20 and was genuinely surprised how good it sounded. The reverb sounds better than my FRV-1 and no digital artifacts, that I can hear. I was concerned that maybe the tape saturation side of it may not be that good. Well, to me it's good and sits well with single coil pickups. My other concern was clocking noise but none to be heard. All concerns were based on multiple reviews I had read that had been written since the pedals release back in 2007. I played it loud through a clean Fender to ensure I picked up nuances. 'Must have a Space Echo', I ended up purchasing it :-)
The FRV-1, I'm gonna spend time with it this weekend. Surely I'm missing something?

Not sure what to tell you.
My FRV-1 has the same issues (good and ill) of the actual tank with a lower noise floor.
It cured my NEED for one.
