I can afford a more expensive car than I drive. I won't do it not out of the fear of theft, but because people are animals. People will tap your bumper, ding your doors, dent or scratch your fender, and just drive off like nothing even happened.
When that happens with a $30,000 car, I'm annoyed. If it happened with a $90,000 car, I would be looking for revenge.

Try driving a mustang GT. I can park in the middle of a parking lot far from the entrance. I will come out and find cars parked next to me everytime. Empty parking spaces all over, but the a-holes have to park next to me.

I used to have the same issue as K4 with my Mustang GT. But now I use the extra wide handicap spaces so the problem went away. I do get funny looks because people don’t expect the old guy huffing and puffing to get to the door to be driving a Mustang GT!

I don't get it. Everytime I have the option of not parking next to someone I take it.

I've got a 2020 F250 so the close spots are limited anyway. Like K4 said it never fails somebody always ends up next to me. Damn A-Holes!

In NYC, the far away spots are usually taken as well. At least in most lots.

I am obsessive about my nice car. I hand wax it etc.
Ironically, I think that the most damage has been done at the dealer. I bought my tires there, and later found some marks on two rims. Their location suggests tire mounting rather than a road incident. I also found a small dent in the hood. The paint- less dent removal performed by a body shop was cheap and miraculous. I always park very far away. I haven’t been driving much, so no parking lot threats lately.
Funny story.......I parked in a safe area of a parking lot a couple spots away from a beautiful New Mustang. I got back to my car, and vibrations or proximity set off an alarm on the Mustang. I was two car widths away! The Mustang had a USMC license plate frame! Oops. Well no one came running to see what happened luckily.

No one makes goo-goo eyes at our 2010 Hyundai Elantra or 1998 Ford Explorer Sport.
Now, on the other hand, my 2013 Fiat 500 cabriolet is the object of intense envy from all who see it (only not in winter.)

The only dents my 2012 Equinox has are from carts at the grocery store parking lot. Some fool is always ramming into my vehicle.

I've been to NYC a couple of times, I wouldn't even want to drive, Lol I don’t want to drive on a daily basis. Although, that’s the one plus of COVID here, our rush hour isn’t what it once was. Especially with the schools closed, I can take the expressway (which is typically anything but “express”) both ways without getting stuck in traffic. I’ve been in traffic exactly twice since March, both times because of accidents.

Here, the main causes of traffic are school (which is now fully remote) and commuting to Brooklyn/Manhattan. Everyone I know who works in Manhattan has been working from home since March, and with things trending in the wrong direction, I don’t see that changing.
Works for me, enjoying my commute taking half the normal time. And, of course, not having to travel to court. Handled a conference on a Manhattan case today, would’ve taken me 2 hours to drive back and forth plus whatever time the conference took. Instead it was 19 minutes at my desk.
Once I have to wear a suit and tie again, and have to go to court again, I’m going to be peeved.

The only vehicle I've had trouble with was a 1996 Civic DX after wrecking my first E30 and moving to CA for school.
Broken into 5x over 3 years with 3 different stereos stolen among other various items.
Car was stolen once, and recovered the next day.
I have another garage queen E30 currently that I semi-restored during 7 years of daily driving and never had any issues with crime.
Current DD is a '19 Tacoma which I use/abuse and wouldn't shed a tear if it got a few dings (although I obv take care of it).
Around here (TN) I would say a luxury vehicle is less likely to get messed with than a common one. I'd love to have a Guards Red 991 GT3but would have to buy a house with a 3-car garage since I don't want to sell my E30 and the wife won't give up her garage space without a fight..

Seems like it's some kind of corollary to Murphy's law that reads something like : Parking in the least occupied portion of a lot (to avoid incidental contact with other cars) will insure that the area's immediate desirability and will attract the very vehicles you are attempting to avoid. Some years ago, I had a bumper repainted (after someone hit it just hard enough to scrape the paint off) and had just received it back from the shop when I drove it to a casino gig. I intentionally parked in the emptiest part of the parking lot. When I came out to go home ... you guessed it ... someone had run into the freshly painted bumper.

Growing up with a father that was in the used car business at one point and parents always driving nice cars, I drive what I enjoy driving, not something I have to drive. Right now it bounces between an Escalade ESV and a Corvette.
The only vehicle I’ve owned that I worry about someone stealing is when my wife and I travel with our Harley. When we spent the night in Cleveland I had to leave the bike in a parking ramp attached to the hotel that didn’t have very secure parking, or Charleston, WV where it was in a parking ramp across the road from the hotel, but the worst experience was spending the night in a little mom ‘n pop motel in West Memphis, AR and waking in the early morning listening to a bunch of gang-bangers outside my room talking about “the nice Harley” and the preference to using a knife rather than a gun because it was quieter.
