I’ve got three fan/light units, and while two are very quiet, one has always had a motor hum. Should I replace the fan, or is there some sort of “polarity” wiring issue that I could fix by reconnecting wires?

Is there a fan speed control/on off switch involved? If so, turn the on/off switch just to where it clicks on. The fan should then be at full speed. Is the hum still there?

Get one with a DC motor and you'll never hear it again. We switched our living room unit to a DC motor and it's so quiet I forget it's on!

Thanks. The fan is "in" our loft -- sort of like a three-walled single "room" in a basically single-story house; realtors call this house "one-and-a-half stories." Well, out indoor furnace/AC unit is there with an intake plus "heat rises," so it gets pretty warm up there even when it is a little on the cool side in the rest of the house. This is pretty much my wife's room -- stereo, books, art work, TV. I noticed that fan noise before and was looking at fans online. My wife didn't express much interest then -- I think she was afraid that I'd kill myself replacing it. But this morning I went up to better analyze the noise, and when I came downstairs, she asked what I was doing. So, here in wintery season with the furnace going on, she's receptive to my replacing the fan.
The fan/light is turned on with a single wall switch. Typical bead chain pull switches control things. The fan was already on high, and makes the most hum, less hum at medium, the least hum at low speed. For a moment, I thought, "not bad," but when you turn it off, the silence is very noticeable.
The DC motor option sounds good. I'll do some looking around at the Lowe's and Home Depot websites and pick one up.

We bought a Casablanca that is ultra quiet unless it is turned for upward air flow that is a whirring sound. Ceiling fans are typically more pricy but I did see two at Home Depot for $89 and $149

I had one with a nasty hum/vibration. Tried to isolate it but eventually replaced it. No worries after that. I did get one that advertised “quiet motor” right on the box.

Depends on what it's humming. If it's "Achy Breaky Heart" I opt for replacement.
