Well, everyone knows that a Gandy Dancer is a member of a railroad track laying crew, right? But it was also a tune on an early Ventures album that I decided to learn and then recorded. This recording was done in about 2004 using Cakewalk Guitar Studio on a PC. I probably used a standard audio mixer out to the built-in soundcard on the computer. Having used a 4 track cassette system, the computer opened up a whole new world for me. I'm proud of this tune because it was the first time I ever learned a song totally by ear, working out every lick and riff on my own. I used my 1988 Mosrite for the lead track. I played my Yamaha digital drum kit directly into the computer. I hope you enjoy this catchy little tune. soundcloud.com/user-893287378/gandy-dancer

Well done TBird. I like the tone you’re getting out of your guitar. 👍

Ain't it fun? When you cannot jam with friends, recording is the next best thing.
I did have fun with Walk Don't Run; thanks for motivating me on that one. Great tune!

Well done TBird. I like the tone you’re getting out of your guitar. 👍 It's been so long since I recorded this tune (as well as other Ventures instros), I'm not sure how I did it. I know the main guitar was a 1988 Mosrite. The amp may have been a Fender Cyber Deluxe direct to the mixer. These days, I use the amp sims in Logic Pro X.

I may attack Slaughter on 10th Avenue next. That is such a great melody.
It's about a car race...not a murder.
Well, I guess it is a murder of sorts.

I loved it. A lot more up-tempo than mine. And brilliant, quoting Hawaii 5-0. Did you do drum track yourself? What app/prog do you record with? Do you mic an amp, go direct or use apps within the recording app?

Thanks man. I cheated and just did the melody portion because my left hand is pretty much a gonner lately (tendinitis and Dupuytren's); it was a backing track with drums/rhythm guitar/bass, here I originally had started by programming the drums into an Alesis SR16, and tried recording the rhythm parts but was unhappy about my hand failing to...play nicely. The Hawaii Five-O portion was sort of a happy accident because I was fiddling with it and discovered the melody fits almost perfectly into the changes for WDR...so I tossed it in there. The recording setup is super simple. I run the guitar into a Line 6 POD HD desktop for all effects (1) through a small USB interface (2--a Behringer UM2), a powered USB hub (3) and USB camera adapter (4) into an iPad Pro (5) running Garage Band. I use no plug-ins or other apps, and I monitor through a small PA via the headphone-out on the UM2. So when I'm tracking instruments, it's loud in the room; way better than headphones because there's energy in the air. Here's a pic:
