Several years back I tried my hand at the royalty-free thing over at Audio Jungle and Pond 5. Ultimately a lot of work for Mr. Molasses here, and little return ($trings, pick$ and a few beer$). The library has to be extensive to make any real money.
One of the things I did was a little 45 second bit, aimed at being a somber piece for maybe sad announcements, etc. What came to mind recently was the soundtrack to Band of Brothers, with the haunting vocal choir. So I tweaked this one a bit, painstakingly using sample wav files of a Mellotron that I downloaded years ago. I autotuned some of the phrasing to make the voices pitch drop at the end of the sample to try and humanize them a bit. I did the same with the Mellotron cello samples panned left. Tracks include;
Piano, cellos (mellotron and xPand2 in Pro Tools), strings (mellotron & xPand2), solo violin, oboe, shakuhachi (xPand 2) and of course the mellotron vocal ensemble. Amazing how warbly and crappy they sound dry but fit in with eq and reverb.
It's a melodically simple piece, but I had fun constructing it.

Sounds like a lot of work but I like the finished product.

Sounds good Larry.
I've never done something like that on my own but did orchestrate a piece for a song a friends daughter wrote many years ago using orchestral samples. The closest thing I've ever done was the intro to the song I posted a few minutes ago but, that was all done with guitars like Brian May would have done.

Speaking of Brian May, I did this brief attempt on Beethoven's Piano Concerto #5 years ago. I think I just got a Korg GSP-7 and tracked it onto my Tascam Cassette Portastudio. It's clunkiness in timing and pitch evoke a sad performance by a Salvation Army Band sporting electric guitars and fuzz boxes, lol. soundcloud.com/user-293867408/emperor/s-Wd48HOvcBEs

It's definitely got that Brian May-ish sound.
