I haven't been able to install the latest OS updates because there's not enough room, even after removing almost all pics, documents, etc. Is this intentional, do you think? Forcing people to purchase larger SSD's? For a long time, you could only get the parts from Apple, but that's no longer the case. This is a 2017 MacBook Pro; I did purchase the cheapest one, but still....
I'll be removing the 128 GB and installing a 1TB Western Digital SSD that I got bought on eBay. Unless I don't have the right tools, which is possible, but I think my iPhone tool kit purchased a few years ago will suffice. There are plenty of videos showing how to do this....but if you don't hear from me for awhile, you'll know things went awry.
We had this same problem with a cheap HP laptop that we bought a few years ago. I made sure that her new Lenovo had plenty of storage.

Well, looks like it'll be tomorrow before I get the upgrade finished. I had the correct tool for removing the back of the MacBook, but not the right one for removing the SSD. So I ordered a kit from Amazon that has just about every tiny bit known to man, it'll be here tomorrow.

Well, the "one day shipping" turned into two day shipping. Still waiting on my little torx bit for removing the SSD.
So am I the only one with a recent MacBook that already doesn't have enough storage to perform updates!? Like I said, I moved almost all pics and documents onto a backup hard drive, and still don't have enough space.

128 Gb drive won't hold an OS? Wow talk about bloat. I have no idea how big a file Win 10 is.
edit
Quick google says 18.5 Gb for apple's newest OS.
You must have a bunch of stuff on that drive.

Thanks for that info. I'll have to do some more checking, I thought I had moved just about everything to the external storage, but obviously that's not the case. I'm much better on Windows than on a Mac, seems to be easier for me to find things on Windows.

Yeah, I'd get an external drive or cloud storage and move that stuff. Apple does planned obsolesce though, it was proven when the were slowing down iOS on older iPhones. I expect it'll only get worse for iPad users as they spun off iOS into iPadOS as well. Give me a PC anyday! Although Win10 requires at least 20GB for a 64k install.

I do have an external drive, 500GB. In fact, I had to move a whole bunch of stuff off of it and onto my wife's laptop, in order to do a backup of the MacBook. This was after I thought I had moved all documents, pictures, and most music off of the Mac, and I still didn't have enough space for the latest OS. But since then, I've found more documents and pics that I could have moved. I think the Mac is way more confusing sometimes, coming from a Windows background. I loved Win Explorer, I could find anything with that. Anyway, at this point...I already purchased the 1TB SSD and it's going in! As soon as my little torx bit shows up, that is.... Then, I'm moving everything back onto the Mac!

Is that because it's a "2" and not the original maybe?

So, I ended up going a few days without my Macbook, thanks to this "upgrade". No matter what I tried, the Macbook didn't like the WD SSD that I purchased off eBay. Eventually, it got to where it wouldn't boot up at all. All it displayed was a low battery warning, and nothing else.
I ended up calling a local repair shop that can work on MacBooks. I told them I'd be bringing it in the next morning.
The next morning, I tried it one more time....and it booted up normally with a 1% battery charge showing. After plugging in the charger, it began the normal charge, and has been fine ever since.
I returned the 1TB SSD that I had purchased, and I will just store documents and pics on an external storage device from now on. Thanks K4!

As a result of your OP Walshb I looked into upgrading my MacBook pro 2015. Mine came with a 250 GB SSD and I looked into a 1 TB SSD. I ordered it from MacSale . OWC Aura Pro x2. It was the kit with the P5 and T5 tools and a case to put the old drive in. It was a bit pricey but looking at reviews I went with it. I had my backup on a external drive done a couple of days before and also on my Airport Extreme 2TB Router. I decided on make a usb external boot drive also before I did anything. After installing new ssd the external backup didn't work so I used the boot drive and downloaded the OS over the internet. when that was completed I restored all info from airport extreme over the wifi. It took all night. I made sure laptop was plugged in for power. Everything worked good the next morning.

I did a "time machine backup" before doing anything, and I thought that would be good enough. Then while holding down a few keys and powering up with the new SSD, it would install OS and it did recognize the 1TB. After doing the time machine backup, which appeared to work just fine, that's when it wouldn't boot up any more. Little white line on the Apple screen would get about halfway across, then it would shut down. I went through that several times. I don't really see why I would need an external boot drive under the circumstances, and didn't try that. I would try it now if I hadn't already sent back the new SSD. Thanks for the info though!

Out of curiosity, I went to that site you mentioned, I was going to bookmark it for future reference, but I couldn't find anything listed for my model. All the SSD's shown are also much larger than the one in my Macbook. Prices didn't seem that bad though, just a little more than what I paid.

That's the model I have, the A1708, and there are lots of videos similar to that, and I did watch that one. But I can't understand what he's saying when he boots it up, and you can't see on the screen what he's doing, either. I did get the spinning world icon which eventually installs an older OS, then after that I'd get a screen where it said I could restore from Time Machine backup. It was after doing that, that it would no longer boot up. As for my OS, I was on Catalina at the time but have now upgraded to the latest and greatest, which is what started the whole problem when I discovered I didn't have enough storage left to do that. Thanks for your help but now I'll resort to external storage.

Well I didn't help much, it's a bummer you couldn't get it to work. At least you're able to do the external storage route. cheers!
