Just got an email from Gibson announcing the acquisition of Mesa Boogie amplifiers. Hope they don’t muck it up!

Trace Elliot calling, they'd never screw up an amp company.

Well, there goes the neighborhood. Will this be Mesa's 'CBS' moment? The Fiat/Chrysler/Peugeot, three stooges calamity? Mesa Bogy???

Boy, I'm not happy to here this. That makes 2 of us. I’m wondering how much longer the back of a Boogie will read “ hand wired in Petaluma California.”

My Mark IV will *always* read “hand wired in Petaluma California.”
Distressing news nonetheless.

Will the new Gibson be diffent from the old Gibson in handling new acquistions ?

My Mark IV will *always* read “hand wired in Petaluma California.” Distressing news nonetheless. Distressing indeed. I just sold my Mark IIC+ DR for a really nice profit and now I'm wondering if that was a wise move. Oh well, it was one helluva an amp but really loud, even in Class A, and after all of my amp adventures I really like the vintage tweeds more than anything for their simplicity.

Geese! Did they not learn anything from their past escapades? What happened to their new business model about working with their strengths that the new head honcho was spouting after Henry left?!

I dunno. I say give it time and see. Gibson has cleaned up their act in the last year or two.
My guess is that Mesa will always be its own brand. It makes sense given its iconic stature.
My employer (Volvo Trucks) owns Mack trucks and has for @20 years now. Volvo didn’t mess with the brand. They acquired it.

Will the new Gibson be diffent from the old Gibson in handling new acquistions ? One would hope so. No Henry, and in the 90s and 2000s when other companies were acquiring like crazy, no one saw any ceiling to growth of a brand and it meant they got sloppy and proved themselves wrong. Since then there have been clearer examples of how to do it right (Gretsch is the shining example, IMO) and how to do it wrong (where to start?).
I can't imagine Gibson wanting to change all that much on their amp lines. No one at Gibson is going to care which thickness board they use in the Triple Rectifier or what kinds of filter caps are used in the Mark IV. I CAN see them wanting to introduce more product lines like a baby Mesa import line or digital lines branded as Mesa. I imagine the original Mesa will remain an inner sanctum that no one really wants to mess with. It'll mean some eyerolls, but the diehard Mesa fans will still have their favorites.

They would be fools to mess with such an iconic brand. My money is on... they won’t.
But yes, I see opportunities.

Recorded my parts for my band’s demo through a Mesa Boogie back in the day. I remember being disappointed it wasn’t a Marshall, but then I played through it and I was very happy.

Charlie Daniels LP’s sounded great through his Mesa Boogie and Paul McCartney Bass amp is Mesa for many years. Boogies are more than Triple Rectifiers. I have owned 2 and wish I had one of them back.

I've been saving up for one of the D-800 iterations and a matching cab so hope the company will continue on essentially unmolested and made in the USA.

I survived EIGHT corporate buyouts during my working days. Each new owner screwed things up. I have no reason to believe Gibson won't screw up this acquisition.
I'm also sure the facility in Petaluma will be shuttered and cause upset with current employees who live there (it's a beautiful community to live in).
I don't dig this news at all.

It’s expensive to run a business in CA. I could see the operation moving to Nashville.

It’s expensive to run a business in CA. I could see the operation moving to Nashville. That's true. Many businesses that haven't been "acquired" are moving to other states seeking a more favorable tax/regulatory environment.
Sometimes the proverbial "golden goose" doesn't get killed: it just flies away.

Carvin is now Carvin in name only and is produced overseas.
If Mesa-Boogie does the same, what quality, "non-boutique"/MIA amps are left out there?
*sigh*

Gibson has stepped up their game in the last 20 years. Perhaps the move is more Randall Smith wanting to attempt cementing his legacy as he is in his 70’s now. I understand he will be running things like a Gibson Custom Shop.

I'm a huge fan of Gibson amps...I've got 3 amps...all Gibsons...late 50's, and early 60's....even though they ran a distant 2nd to Fender, they are great amps and a real bargain compared to them...
I hope that Gibson can combine the magic they had from the past with a fresh face of the present...
I'll keep my fingers crossed...

Next acquisition should be a company that can keep Les Pauls in tune

Thant would be cool. Of course Fender acquired Floyd Rose and doesn't use much for strats. Maybe for Charvel, EVH's sake? I still like the look of the vintage Klusons. Might try a locking set.

Next acquisition should be a company that can keep Les Pauls in tune Snap the head stock and have it repaired. It will be rock solid. Before mine broke I was lucky to get 4 songs, after it broke I could play a whole set.

I think they should snap them at the factory before they apply the finish.
