Always liked the movie but could never figure that out. The innerwebz say everything from "cause he could" to he was showing off, he was afraid of putting it in drive for fear of triggering a car bomb. Anyone know the definitive answer?

Backing down a one way street is a very New York gangster thing to do, as if that makes it ok. We see it all the time here.
Not sure if that was the intention, but as a New Yorker, it didn’t even strike me as odd.

Definitely not. If that was the case, he wouldn’t have loaned Calogero the car for his date. After which, Sonny said the car wouldn’t start, and then they found something on the engine. It was starting the car he was worried about. Had there been an issue with driving forward and having to drive in reverse, Somny would have either told Calogero this or would not have given him the car. I’m pretty sure my theory is right. I’ve grown up among these guys, driving in reverse on a one way street is a known phenomenon. And I checked the movie, at least some of the street in that scene was one way in the other direction.

I didn't see any street signs, but there were cars parked in the street in both directions. And yeah that was only a block away drive, doubt Sonny was doing all of his driving in reverse.

1:08, after the turn, clearly cars facing one direction, no center line, clear one way street.

Or would he? Honestly I remember them talking about the driving down the street in reverse and the bomb connotations as well... but I haven't seen the movie in years

It’s such a New York thing that I can’t even understand how it’s a question.

Pretty clever if you ask me. I might have to try it next time I'm in Covington.

Pretty clever if you ask me. I might have to try it next time I'm in Covington. Back in the day ( late 70’s) at DFW Airport we couldnt figure how this one guy always seem to get to a downed train first nearly everytime as we had to leave a terminal area turn right and take one way service road and loop around to it. One day I rode with him. We got a call and he left terminal and turned right as he should, got over in left lane of the 2 lane service road, stopped, slammed it in reverse, floored it and backed down to it with emergency lights on and cars moving around him. I thought he was crazy but it worked great. No mystery after that. 😂
