My wife and I are moving 30 miles North into nicer digs.
Both daughters have moved to the Northeast with their soldier hubbys. They are settling up there for sure. Wife and I have contemplated moving to that region to be nearer them.
However, it dawned on us that, as two old duffers, we would probably not be able to find new friends very easily. I’ve got riding buddies, some guys from my old Army unit to party (and stay sane) with, and some jamming buddies. My wife has her little gaggle of German Army wives she likes to gab and drink coffee with. All of that would be irreplaceable.
But we want to see a lot more of the kids and grandkids. So we decided to get a big place in an attractive, kid-friendly and safe area that would attract them to us. Our old place was a bit too small to accommodate for or five extra people; plus the neighborhood has gradually been going to Hell.
Now I’m five minutes from the rural, back entrance to the vast forested area of the Fort Bragg training area! There are managed fishing lakes, shooting ranges, hunting and wildlife. As a retired vet, all these things are open to my us and our guests. Plus, I’m still near my friends. The VA hospital nearby takes great care of me.
Our neighborhood is in a vast pine forest, settled by the Scots, that managed to never get cut down for logs. It’s got low hills and everything is spread out. The area is populated largely by Active Duty and retired military from the Special Operations and Airborne community. Crime is extremely low and the people are friendly.
As I write this, I can hear the sound of a 25mm Canon in the distance... Blackhawk helicopters routinely fly by low and slow.
It blows my mind that we came *this close* to being up to our kiesters in snow in a strange, unfamiliar place, relying on our kids for companionship. Now they can escape the snow and come down to us in Souther Pines.
