I found out that in the early years the tele had a "dark tone" setting on the 3 way switch rather than the "neck - both - bridge" that I have on my MIM. I'm happy with what I have but still curious. I've found some online demos/sound samples but does anyone know of a period track where a tele actually used this setting in the popular music of the time? Would just like to look it up and hear what they were thinking in action. I figured this would be the best place to ask.

Leo and company included the "deep soft rhythm" setting (neck pickup with cap in series) on the Broadcaster so guitar players could mimic the deep sound of a bass. This was before the Precision Bass existed. It was pretty dark sounding and most players didn't use it.
Listen to Luther Perkins on early Johnny Cash recordings and you'll sometimes hear it when Perkins is playing that 'boom-chicka-boom' rhythm he invented.

Thanks Peegoo - I will have to revisit this. The older guys I worked with on my 1st job were big fans of the genre. Heard this kind of stuff on the 8 track every morning riding in the truck with them on the way to the job sites. Thanks

I never had a Tele with that wiring but recall playing the early RI's that came that way. Gaack, a totally useless sound IMO.
I still have an Esquire control plate set up for the "Eldred Mod" and couldn't live with that either.
But lately it's been on my mind 😄

Didn't the 52 Reissues come stock with that set up?
I bought mine used and it was stock, so the first thing I did was rewire with the modern wiring per the included Fender directions.
I seem to remember them coming from the factory with the dark setting.
Could be wrong though...

My AVRI 52 Tele has the "dark tone" switch position. Don't ever use it. I may rewire to the standard switching.

I've never found it useful when I've played it. Think of it as an extra, invisible tone control with a high value cap that is always rolled down. It'll be a bit more thunky than just rolling down the tone control in your MIM Tele (probably .047uf). In their mindset the idea of ever playing leads on a neck pickup was pretty abstract, so lots of stuff like this was considered. Fender also seemed in love with the idea of using the switch to go between presets rather than just a tool to dial in the right sound for something - why the Strat has the two tone controls (probably assumed everyone would want the neck rolled all the way down all the time) and the mess of switches on Jazzmasters and Jaguars. If someone wanted to have that sound for the rare instance, it would make most sense on a push/pull pot or something, easy enough to wire up.
If you get your hands on a cap (.1uf I think, not hard to find but not guaranteed to be in any given parts bin), it would be easy enough to try just in the name of science. You could even alligator clip it in - Teles are friendly for this experimentation since it is playable with the control cavity open, unlike a Strat.

I built an Esquire once with the original wiring setup for the bridge pickup which had a "dark" setting instead of neck, and I never used it. Doing something similar to the already bassier neck pickup sounds useless to me, but can't really say I've heard it.
