As I said in a previous post, I always liked the styling of the D'Angelico guitars with their distinctive headstock, tail-piece and art-deco vibe. I did play a couple in GC and they sounded good and played well, but I didn't like the colors. They were Premier models, which they say is the entry-level.
I didn't want to spend $1200, but the Excel DC really appealed to me. I found the best price on Amazon, of all places. No case was shown, so I assumed part of the low price was no case. Not a big problem.
I got the guitar today, and found that the guitar was shipped in a hard-shell case! I have to say, this is one beautiful guitar. The natural flame-maple top is gorgeous. Full 3 ply binding and knobs carrying on the art-deco theme, and all the gold appointments - tuners, tailpiece, p/u covers, truss rod cover, just add to the classy appeal.
As good as it looks on my wall, it wouldn't matter much if it didn't sound as good as it looks. Earlier models had Kent Armstrong HB's, which were reputed to be rather dark sounding, but the Seymour Duncan 59's in this model sound great. And the tone- control is a splitter for single-coil sounds. Not Fendery, but nice too. I may eventually take it for a pro set-up, but right out of the box it plays well.
As you probably have figured out, I'm very happy with this guitar.

Nice guitar!...it looks so good that it's practically begging for that first ding. Hopefully that won't happen!

I realized one evening as I was playing the D'Angelico that this guitar has a vibe that makes me feel good just holding it, looking at it. I've never been lucky enough to have even seen a real D'Angelico, but this modern instrument does connect to that past. Even though it's made overseas, there is real artistry in the superb flame body, the triple binding, gold hardware, and, of course, that distinctive headstock.

I wonder if its manufactured in the same place the Agiles are built, or for that matter the PRS models like the Zach Myers. Any guitar I've owned or held made in S.Korea has been incredibly well made.

I’ll look at mine again, but I think SK is correct. And yes, they’re like the Japan of years ago, in some cases.

Mine has a sticker on back of the headstock that says Made In Indonesia.
edit to add:
Went to wikipedia and it says they're manufactured in South Korea, Indonesia, China and New York.
