When I was a kid, the brass ring to reach for was making $10,000 a year. Yeah, I remember talking with co-workers and saying "Man, if I could just get up to $16K/year, I could live like a kings". An anesthesiologist was walking by and he said "I don't know how anyone could live on less than $60K/year". $60K, to us, was just an insane amount of earning for a year. I'm sure he was making 3-4 times that at the time.

I think my big ‘made it’ moment came in the 80’s when I topped $25K. I swear I was better off financially then, than 4 times that at retirement.

Today's 1 million is yesterdays $75 K. ^This^. According to the last time I checked, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says a dollar is worth a dime when I use my birth year as a starting point. YMMV. Do the math. Edited to add, I have more that enough money to see my way through to the dirt knap. I'm perfectly happy not being rich as all that does can make you crazy...IMO, of course.

Being rich may be a PITA, but there's a lot to be said for not having to worry about money so much.

The trouble with having a lot of money is there is always someone trying to relieve you of it.
BS&T said it, “ and when you got money, you got lots of friends, hanging ‘round your door”.

That is why people with money usually only hang out with other people with money.

Wow. I do not consider having no mortgage as part of my retirement. I have zero debt in addition, but a million in separate funds is in no way a comfortable future. End up in extended care and that is no money at all. If I am categorized as rich, I don’t see it. 2 1/2 million free and clear is the new comfort zone once debt free. I am not exact there but between my wife and I we do receive almost 60K in SS. Yes we waited until it was maxed out.
