Heard this on BBC Radio last night. Pretty interesting revelations on the topic:

I didn't listen to the programme, but I've always figured it's a stress reliever through the release of endorphins in the brain.
Similar to how you holla when you stub your toe. Yelling in pain helps kill the pain through a psychochemical process.

What I perhaps found most interesting was the effect that massive brain trauma can have on a person's ability to swear.
Now you'll have to either listen to the audio or cuss me for not telling you more...

I've known people with brain trauma that beforehand were pretty mellow types but afterwards wow. the filter just came off and never really came back. Cutest little old lady I ever knew could cause a sailor to blush in 2 seconds. I don't know the cause but something just goes out the window.

My mother never cursed until after she got Alzheimer's then you never knew what would come out of her mouth or when.

I remember my dad telling me of his experience as a young Polish lad enamoured with American GI's in Germany post WWII. He and his mates would refer to them as "Fookas", based on the most articulated sounds they interpreted coming from their mouths. A few short years later he was one of them.
Americans are probably the most prolific vulgarians of the species, although I'm always amused by other culture's contributions.

Funny thing is, a study shows that chimps who have been taught sign language make the sign for "excrement" when they are faced with circumstances similar to those which would cause humans to swear verbally.
No kidding.
Cussing is evidently more primitive than I might've previously guessed.

No kidding. Cussing is evidently more primitive than I might've previously guessed. That is interesting. I knew they were responsive and able to communicate with sign language but had not heard this.
