Am I missing something? Why would it be about anything else?? Precisely! All their kumbaya signaling crap has nothing to do with their convictions no matter how hard they try to make it appear that it does.

All their kumbaya signaling crap has nothing to do with their convictions no matter how hard they try to make it appear that it does. At the end of the day, it's a business. They do whatever sells. I often say, if they did a 100% realistic show about lawyers, nobody would watch it because it would be boring as hell. I suspect that's true of any occupation. Personally, I don't mind watching a hot chick kick a dude's butt. Not once do I sit there and say "If this ever really happened there would be no way she would win", because its a TV show. Does one watch The Walking Dead and say "this can't possibly happen because zombies don't exist"? No, no one does not. One goes in knowing that its TV and its not based in reality. Same is true for non-zombie shows.

I hardly watch TV. I've just retired, and the TV doesn't go on during the day until Mrs Ayns comes in from work, then she watches the usual round of soap operas, "reality" shows et al. I usually only pay limited attention to what's on. But....... I've recently discovered "Undercover Boss (USA)" , and I know it's formulaic and corny, but I've watched two episodes and I nearly cried both times. Good people, doing good things for each other. It probably gets old, quick YMMV

I'm beginning to think that show about the coyote chasing after the roadrunner is pure fiction. A coyote doesn't have thumbs, so how can he write checks or use a credit card to get all that ACME equipment? No, this is reality TV. Evolution, bro.

I guess my biggest gripe about TV is the constant barrage of whatever is politically correct this week. Political correctness is one of my biggest pet peeves. My comment about the skinny hot chick kicking 'bigfoot's' butt isn't as much about the reality of her doing it as it is the overt political correctness of putting her in that role.
Don't get me wrong. I am all for equal rights for EVERYONE, women included. I just get tired of having that, and issues LIKE that, being so "In your face" all the time. If I want to watch TV I have little choice in the matter. It is everywhere and I can't get away from it. So, if my wife didn't want me to watch TV with her, I would N E V E R turn it on. I certainly wouldn't be paying the ridiculous amount of money every month for DirecTV. I want to be entertained not preached to.

I hear this a lot on the FDP. I guess I just don’t worry about what anyone preaches to me. I can ignore it and just watch the girl fight because it’s fun. I don’t worry about the ethical or social messages contained in TV shows. I can ignore them pretty well, so no reason to get upset. I don’t need a man to be the lead or the problem solver in every show. Plus, most of the time, they kind of pick attractive women for those roles. Which I also don’t have a problem watching.

I don't need a man to be the lead in every role either but there's a point for me when it is so over-the-top that I can't ignore it. I'm trying real hard here not to get political but Hollywood's slant is extremely one-sided. When I said "Equal rights" it applies to that as well. It's not equal when almost the whole entertainment industry shamelessly promotes one and has disdain for the other. If that were any other kind of business I wouldn't patronize them. If I want to watch TV or a movie I have little to no choice. That bugs me. It's a monopoly of sorts and that is not right. I have a real problem with both sides. Most of the country lives in the middle but that is seldom addressed in today's entertainment industry from either direction. I enjoy watching pretty women too. That's how I get through programs with underlying themes.

Its pretty simple for me. If I'm going to invest my time watching something, it better entertain and not annoy. I don't need to make compromises in how I'm entertained. Wouldn't sit through a night of a band playing (name your hated genre) either.
Edit to add: I guess it all depends on how one chooses to utilize TV entertainment. I know a lot of people don't fully engage and use it as almost background noise. A lot of us grew up with TV being the babysitter.

Cut the cable several months back and I don't miss what was available on their overpriced crappy offerings.
Got an antenna to watch some OTA old classic sitcoms, PBS, antenna TV, ME TV, local news.
I have enough DVD's & Blu rays of movies to last me a lifetime if I want to see a movie.
I'll never pay for cable again, ever.

I'm an addict. Mine is on all the time. I'm especially focused on the middle series and toggle from CNN to MSNBC to CSpan. I love all the quaint Brit murder mysteries on PBS ala Father Brown and Endeavor.
In terms of 'mind control' I think the current greater threat is the internet. I find my MacBook is on my lap all day long as I surf the Net. I spend hours on every nook and cranny on Wiki.
But I wonder if my computer is taking over. I will think of something like, 'ya know I need a bedliner for the truck...." and without uttering a word about it out loud I get bombarded with bed liner ads.
I noticed a tear in my Lazy Boy. I never said anything to anybody about it. Then stuff began popping up about 'leather repair patches'.
I'm telling you somebody is taking over the camera on my laptop and scans my apartment and figured out what I need before I did.

Did anyone else start thinking about the 2nd verse of Marshall Crenshaw's Cynical Girl upon seeing the thread title?
