That's right - Surfinboy's reached the age where his doctor wants to shove a camera up his rear end. I figure I'll be at my worst for about 2 days, is that correct? I've heard the night before you're drinking awful stuff and basically chained to the toilet, and you're out of commission for a day or so after the procedure. Any advice on getting through this as painless as possible?

Singing “Blue Moon” on the way in and out of the operating room will put everyone in a good mood. You’ll be required to fart copiously after the procedure. The preflight is the worst part. You won’t likely remember the procedure. You’ll be a little loopy afterwards for a few hours but you should be fine after that.

The night before keep the toilet prepped and don’t stray too far away.

Trust me. You will survive.
I went through a stretch of time several year’s ago where I became so accustom to drinking huge quantities and all manner of nasty stuff, it became common place.
It was something like two colonoscopies and three CT scans in 8 months.
One time would be a breeze. And I guess by most standards I’m due again now.

The day after is not so bad.
When I had mine a year and a half ago, I asked "isn't that what Michael Jackson was taking" just to lighten things up with some dark humor. The nurse sternly told me that Jackson's doctor was not qualified to administer propofol and they were.

I've had 2. The procedure was the best naps ever. The prep is the worst part. Both times after I went straight to a restaurant and a chowed down. You'll be allright.

I have had 4. Due another this year. And the night before is the worst part as mentioned. Procedure is nothing. You will not even remember it.

its not bad at all. The worst is the prep. Mine was taking 2 dulcolax day before and Drinking 8oz of Gatorade and mirolax every 15 min for 2 hrs (64oz) and then living on the toilet for the evening.Procedure you don't even remember. No driving or operating equipment after procedure until the next day. you can eat what ever you want after its done.

As has already been said: the prep is worse than the procedure.

In hindsight (nyuk) I did find the waiting once laid out on the table a little irritating.

I’ve had a few of them and always wake up towards the end of the procedure and get to watch the monitor as the doc is probing away. I’ve got one scheduled for a couple of weeks from now and mentioned to the nurse when she called that I always wake up so we’ll see if that up the sleepy-time drugs.

Worst part: the prep...dashing to the hopper.
Best part: getting a good meal after, because you haven't eaten for 24 hours.
The procedure itself is a breeze. You take a nap, and when you wake up it's done and you fart a lot...and it's okay!
As you drift off to sleep, tell the team, "wake me up when we get to Cleveland!" They'll have a laff.
And if you remember...as they wheel you out, ask "are we in Cleveland already?"

If there's handprints on your shoulders; you were in the wrong building.
They give you milk of amnesia; you wont remember being violated.

In my case, my first time was a twofer, colonoscopy and EGD down to the stomach. Of course I had to instruct them to do the EGD first should they use the same scope. I had a good chuckle and they feigned a good laugh probably for 10th time that day.

Most of the guys have already offered good advice. I had one a couple of years ago. No food for 24 hours beforehand. Only black coffee and water. Stay near the toilet facilities. Embarrassingly, I fainted in the pre-op room. Luckily I was sitting down at the time. The actual, procedure; I didn't feel a thing. They had the TV screen right beside me so I could watch if I wanted to. I didn't Apparently I was talking absolute nonsense when I came around, but I sort of knew I was, if that makes sense. Piece of cake.

Haven't had one yet.
Took my father in for one several years ago. The nurse invited me into his area as he woke up, and the doctor came up to me and shoved some papers under my nose and started telling me about the results. Before I had a chance to know what I was looking at, I was staring straight down the barrel of my old man's colon in full color photos. C'mon doc, I know you have to look at these all day, but at least warn me first!
What's the point of my story? I dunno. New Facebook profile picture?

After my last one my wife and I were escorted to a waiting area to discuss the results with doctor. Long wait. Sitting on a chair was my file. My wife grabbed it and we started looking at the pictures. Now I've seen the landscape before but these photos had some areas of black. OMG, is that cancer? Necrosis?? I felt like how you'd expect George Costanza would react. After a few torturous minutes the doc showed up and went onto explain that he tattooed some markers to aid a surgeon should I ever decide on elective surgery to remove a problematic section of colon. The black area was actually India ink tats.

Trust me on this - refrigerated baby wipes. You're welcome. +1 or vaseline applied during the prep or you run a risk of a seriously sore exhaust port for a week after the painless procedure.

Aside from frequency I had no issue with, uh, acidity. My wife on the other hand went through hell, so the refrigerated baby wipes is duly noted.

The last time I went in for this. the doc prescribed me something new. Sureprep I believe was the name. I was standing by the sink and mixed the gunk up(it comes in two bottles) and after it was mixed somewhere around a quart or less. I proceeded to drink it as directed. Whoa Nelly! I didn't even get it all down before I was overtaken by the urge. By urge I mean RUN ! Unbelievable stuff. After that I was pretty much done. None of this waiting and wondering and hanging close to the bathroom. The next day went as planned and I was done. The only thing I was bothered by a bit was when I was waking up I was breaking wind for about ten minutes straight. I was laying there listening to that forever it seemed like. I remember chuckling away. Good Luck!

Since I was gonna take the day off, I went to the eye doctor later that day, (9:30 procedure, 3:30 eye Dr.) had no problems. I'm scheduled for a re-do in April.. google up "HygiPrep" or "Hygleaprep"...it's an alternative to having to drink the blecchy stuff the day before, and my doctor has the machine! I'm hoping it goes smoothly!!
