...but didn't grow up in the Chicago area or even the mid west (as I did not), might find this interview interesting. I'd never seen him out of character before and really knew nothing about the man behind the persona or how he got into it:
He was too cornball for me at first, but I love old horror films and he kinda grew on me a little after awhile. When I was a kid, we had a woman whose character ("Moona Lisa") did a similar shtick on a San Diego station. And, of course, there was Bob Wilkins' "Creature Features" up in the SF Bay Area during the early 1970s.

We had our own version of Svengoolie in the 1970s on Channel 44's (Tampa) Creature Feature--Dr. Paul Bearer: Dick Bennick's character was a whole lot more cornball than Svengoolie, and that made him quite entertaining. Some of the really bad puns I use today were from that show. He passed away in the mid 90s at the age of 66, and is trademark sign-off was always, "I'll be lurking for yoooo."

I check in on Svengoolie. I remember short story paperbacks with Zackerley in the title. One I remember is Zackerley's Midnight Snacks. Jim

When I was a kid in Omaha they had a Saturday night show called "Creature Feature". It was hosted by a guy named Dr. San Guinary. My older brother bowled with him in a league.

We watch Svengoolie every Saturday evening we can. We love the campy old horror shows and his trivia questions. I started watching Sven in Chicago 25 years ago when I’d watch the TV in our van while my wife was getting her hair done in Bucktown.

Love Sven, we had Dr. Cadaverino in Milwaukee. I get the feeling that he may have watched Steve ("Steverino") Allen on TV whwen he was a kid...

Love Sven, we had Dr. Cadaverino in Milwaukee. I remember Dr. Cadaverino on channel 6 from Milwaukee. Kids would send letters to him and he’d respond with stuff like, “why do you stupids send this stuff to me”, and his headless buddy Iggy.

"Jack Dublon also did Albert the alleycat (puppet)with Ward Allen the weatherman."AH HA! Thanks, I've been trying to remember that detail for years, I knew it was some puppet.
