I know we are not a political forum but without getting into any politics I think we should be made aware of the EPA's over reaching rules.
The EPA says no one can modify a car that has an original VIN into a purpose built race car. So if you have a BMW M3 and completely gut it, add roll crash protection and remove all but performance exhaust components and never drive the car on the street.
You are now in violation of the clean air act.
Under this administration the EPA has been authorized to go after race cars. Cars that are never driven on the street.

But couldn't this act cause the climate to quit changing?!

Thanks for the heads up. As you say, it is a topic that spirals into politics quickly. Did some quick online search but it's hard to find information that isn't heavily biased by the viewpoint of the authors (e.g. performance tuning shops).
On the face of it this does seem problematic - it would limit racing to those who can afford to custom build race cars from the ground up. Or severely limit the types of modifications you can make to a production car's power train. Grassroots racing teams would be seriously impacted.
In the form of racing I do (Stage Rally) I don't think this would have as large an impact since Rally cars are registered, inspected road vehicles as we need to drive them on public roads as we transit between race stages over the course of the day.
Appreciate the heads up.

Sounds like a law made to be broken. I say, keep on keepin' on with what ever mod you want to do to enjoy your sport.

So much for many NHRA classes. NHRA is the largest participatory racing sport in the country. Jim

Does this include original VIN cars powered by windmills?

Look up RPM act.
This will affect road racers the most because of the amount of time the cars are at WOT. This creates a huge amount of heat in the cats and causes them to melt.
A friend of mine owns a performance shop and has been visited by the EPA. He no longer sells off road parts. Basically puts him out of business.

Hotrodders have been breaking the rules for decades, they'll survive to race another day. I cannot confirm this, but I think I know of at least one Mustang owner that has removed the smog pump and the catalytic converters from his Mustang GT, just like Mustang guys have always done, and always will do.

The issue is they are saying it is illegal to modify a car into a race only car. The end result might be the enforcement division shows up at a local race track and starts fining people who have modified race cars.

I looked up this issue, and yeah it seems absurd. As I was reading several articles I was already thinking of work-arounds, and figured out a couple possibilities, lol. (devious minds work like that, ya know ) It will be interesting to see what happens, if necessity spawns, umm, "creative" ways to circumvent this BS. Thanks for posting this topic, K4!

I get the "work around" but the wording in the "rule" is any car with a VIN. Kind of hard to argue your 2012 Camaro didn't come with a VIN when it is stamped in several areas.
Now GM does make a race car without a vin, but they only make like 50 a year and they are over 100K
Same with Ford.

Not much apolitical to say about it so I'll pass. Maybe this much: good for you if there is a vast hinterland close by to roam discretely. Same as it ever was, somehow. 😎

"Roaming discreetly" is no replacement for track racing, IMO. I enjoy spirited driving, but there is no way I'd get to the speeds (and gs!) you can get to on the track, which I don't do anywhere near enough.

I get the "work around" but the wording in the "rule" is any car with a VIN. I hear ya. This is kinda the angle I was approaching it from. In other words, how much of the original car has to be present for it to still count as a "car with a VIN"? What if the VIN is gone? Without getting too specific, I have ideas already on how to get around this. (think of tube framed cars with factory body panels, etc) I don't know... I've said too much, I hear black helicopters circling as I type, LOL
