...then you probably built a bunch of plastic model kits. My brother and I sure did.
I'd never really thought much about the origins or inner workings of the companies that produced them til I stumbled across these YouTube vids. I found them pretty interesting:

Put together many, mostly cars, all gone now. Started doing balsa recently, enjoy it when there's time. Thanks for the y tube video and the Boot Hill pic. that was one of many cool car kits out there. They had good marketing with the boxes allways.

Built quite a few myself but they bit the dust at some point in time, probably when my interest changed to girls. 😉

The AMT factory was 5 miles from home. I would occasionally get a glimpse of it, which was a thrill. Penske Vehicle Services is in the building now.

My brother and I built planes, ships and a couple of armored vehicles as pre-adolescents. I was partial to WWI biplanes and also build the "Blue Knight of Milan" and the "Silver Knight of Augsburg", which were a couple of the "figurines" mentioned in the first video. As teenagers, we switched to cars, overwhelmingly AMT. We got pretty into that, painting them with metallic finishes (color tint over silver or gold) and airbrush-type fades (my introduction to "sunburst"!).
We lived 10 miles outside of town, so on the way home from Sunday church, our parents would stop and do the weekly grocery shopping. Before proceeding to the market, they would drop us off at the nearby hobby shop, where we would browse while they were shopping. The shop was owned and run by a husband & wife team and the man was a prolific model builder. The display case facing the front window (and sidewalk) was filled with his completed kits, meticulously painted in great detail. Running around the entire perimeter of the shop, about 6' off the floor, a narrow shelf featured an HO-scale train that ran constantly during business hours. The train also descended to the display window at the front of the store, where it passed through an elaborate diorama.
The place also stocked toys like lead soldiers, Dinky Toys, balsa wood gliders, paper & stick kits for building planes that actually flew and the little gasoline, piston engines to power them. That place was like a virtual wonderland for a couple of young boys like us and we spend many a happy hour in there, marveling at all the "cool stuff".

My older brothers were into the model building more than I was but I did build a few cars. Hot rod’s if I remember right and Revell looks familiar. Testor’s glue and paint.

In fifth grade, we did the model car equivalent of 'Battle Bots'
Two kids would line up around 8 feet from each other, and crash their model cars into each other, the winner being the one with least damage.
We got somewhat creative with our modifications, but kicked a kid out of our group when he put iron slugs into his car's engine compartment.

I grew up in the 80s and built a lot of model kits.
My favorite things to build, though, were the balsa and tissue paper Guillows plane kits
an the Estes model rockets.

I built a few Guillows planes back in my youth.
It's a shame we didn't have super glue way back then.

A lot of the kids in my neighborhood, me included, built model cars. We’d end up with a box of “extra parts” left over from the customizing parts. Then we’d swap those parts. I don’t have today a single car I built.
I also built one fighter jet. I think it was an F-102, but time fades the memory. I was really into fighter jets, and was pretty sure I’d pilot one when I grew up. Ha, ha! Didn’t happen.

As a child I was into model war planes and ships. But building them was often a source of frustration for me. I was not good at it. Mess up a clear plastic "window" with a fingerprint or a little too much glue, suddenly all that work is down the drain. The best part for me was if I managed to finish and it was time to apply the decals. I loved doing those. But then some of them (I think the ones from Aurora were the worst) had a tendency to fall apart. And like with the windows, one ruined decal and I'm heartbroken. Or at least that's how it felt to me. I got into model car kits a little later and was a little better at it. Still too "ham-fisted" as they say with all the tiny parts.
