Ordered a tele body from Warmoth back in December. Nothing fancy, just a standard 2 pickup, solid color Tele body. It finally arrived in mid April and I am finally getting a chance to start my build.
If only...turns out the front pickup route is miscut, and my Duncan tele single coil pup won't fit in the hole. And the string ferule holes are too small. And the pickguard I ordered was cut wrong with the wrong mounting holes. Since this was a 'custom' (read: non-stock) order I'm on my own. I have someone who is talking who can help me, but for nearly $500, I expected much better than what I received. And communication wasn't so great. Was told 8-10 weeks originally, but after I ordered, they changed lead times, but never told me. I only found out because I reached out, so the body arrived a month later than expected as well.
Overall, a major disappointment, and I am doubtful I would ever order from them again.

Well, if THEY messed up the order you shouldn't be on your own. If you punched the wrong thing into the website, then you are. Their practice used to be that rebuilds and such were expedited, so if they did mess something up you should have a shorter lead time.
The pickup is a head scratcher. All of their pickup routing is done on CNC and shouldn't have any variation. Three possibilities come to mind: too much finish (not likely, they're good at taping stuff off), an over sized pickup (stacks, mini HBs, etc. sometimes run a tad too large and need some coaxing) or the pickguard isn't holding the pickup over the hole in the correct place. I always make sure a guard has stuff mounted on it before I commit to a final location and drill holes for this reason.
How far off are the ferrules? Did you get the ferrules from them? Small variance is acceptable/expected, larger not so much.

A friend had a disappointing experience with them in recent years. Custom ordered neck that arrived with an ugly knot in the wood and a reluctance to take back. I think they ultimately did, but shipping was on him.
I'll add that I've had several bodies, necks and pickguards from Warmoth and never personally had a problem. I was slightly disappointed with the color of a Fiesta Red Strat body, but I think that's more of my finicky interpretation of the color. Never had a problem with the fit of any.

Wow, that is certainly odd. I've been buying from Warmoth since they were called Boogie Bodies, and anytime there was a goof they fixed it.
Sorry to hear you're having issues with 'em. I wonder if things are changing there; it's been a few years since I oordered from them.

I doubt anything is changing with them. When I did my 'Warmoth build', I ordered the body first and then the neck at a later date so as to give me time to work on the body for it's needs of finishing and mounting hardware. After ordering the neck, there was a problem in the process were something got messed up. They got a hold of me thru email and told me about the issue and assured me the neck build would be a top priority and would get it in two to three weeks from the point of contact. They were true to their word and while I wasn't too happy about it, shnit happens and everything turned out great in the end. The neck on my build is smooth as silk and the best feeling neck of any of my guitars. They are a small company and very much in demand these days and they are not infallible. I experienced good customer service from them from my dealings and if I ever decide to do another build, I won't hesitate to go with them again. Funny thing about this thread. I just got finished ordering some hardware from them a few minutes ago then, I saw this thread.

I've done three Warmoth builds, including this "nothing fancy" Tele build. DSC_2418 by Larry Madsen, on Flickr I've had zero problems. This Tele has Dimarzio PUPs in it ... not sure how that compares to your SD. I'd be interested in some PICs to see the problems, if you care to post any. .

The knot in the neck is surprising. One of Warmoth's strongest assets/abilities has been wood sourcing and selection. Of course, they've changed factories and had turn over, so who knows what is going on these days.

Yeah, I never saw a pic of the knot but know the guy is an experienced builder and has had good luck with them before. This way maybe a couple of years ago.

Because of Covid, Warmoth's full working staff have reduced not in numbers but work hours. In the meantime, with "stay home" orders, everyone is building guitars from parts to make the days at home pass easier. This resulted in bit of dilemma for Warmoth to catch up in production. Hopefully they will overcome this.

Get on the phone and talk to them about it. Ive never had a problem that didn’t end up getting worked out with Warmoth. It might be that your method of communication isn’t as constructive as it could be toward reaching a solution and Ive been guilty of similar situations myself. Step back, put on your best Mr Play Nice Hat and try to inspire someone there to help you out..
String ferrules... If its just the thickness of the finish, you could try heating up the ferrules so to just soften up the finish as they go in. ...or purchase ferrules from another company. I’ve actually been able to to a rep at Allparts to break out a pair of calipers to take a measurement of a part for me.
