I've discussed this before at the FDP I think. Despite trying everything, which includes open back cans/custom buss sends for monitor control/low volume/no bass, I can't get a proper read on pitch. The closer the source is to my ears the higher the pitch. If I take my cans off slowly while monitoring and move them away from my head it has a sort of doppler effect. I know it's got to be a pressure thing but weird that I'm not finding a solution. And it seems to be getting worse. Could be my freakin' tinnitus is competing in there somewhere too.
So tossing up the mic shield while facing my monitors at lowest possible volume seems to produce acceptable results. I can slice out the dead air bleed anyway. What I hear seems not far from some isolated vocal tracks I've heard from the pros, and hey, I'm not trying to shag a record deal or anything, so...

WHAT??? You're not shopping all of your songs to the major labels to get a million dollar advance? Back in the early days nobody wore headphones when tracking vocals. There were monitors in the live room for playback monitoring when doing overdubs. It's really noticeable on a lot of Beatles recordings. They used heavy compression on the vocals and you can hear a difference in the room ambience on the sound of the playback anytime the vocals are present. Especially when there are breaks between vocal lines. Occasionally you can hear it as they bring up the levels before the vocal actually starts. They would use a mic with either a figure 8 or cardioid pattern to minimize the off axis bleed. I sometimes have trouble with that as well. I can usually make it work by either removing the phones on one ear or creating a balance by sliding them back off one, or both, ears so I can hear my voice in the room mixed with what's coming through the phones.

So I tracked all the vocals recklessly without cans and I do think I can hear the room, especially on the higher melody lines. This is a track that I got inspired to write/do after watching the Funk Bros film. Trying to keep it in that pocket. Great sound Larry. You definitely copped that Motown feel.
I can always hear my room in the mic. Sometimes it's not very noticeable in the mix unless there's not much going on.
One of these days I'm going to set a mic and record acoustic guitar in different locations in my room just to see what it sounds like on playback. I also have 2 acoustic baffles that didn't get hung on the wall I can use to set up a pseudo-acoustically neutral zone to record in. Between using them and trying different places in the room I should be able to figure out what is going to work the best. I know for certain that it sounds different playing acoustic guitar while sitting on the bed as opposed to sitting in a chair in front of my desk. I can hear it without a mic. Using the mic shield and the baffles I should be able to come up with a very good sounding track.
