Had two Marantz home theater receivers bite the dust within 60 days of each other. Both were the hearts of their respective home theater systems, and both had also been used for music and streaming. NR1708 went first. Left front channel sounded like it had a Fuzz Face in the circuit. NR1504 followed soon after. Went dark. No coaxing it back to life. Am not patient enough to wait while these units languish in the queue to get to a local service bench. Replacements ordered from Denon. One received and up and running; the other due next week. Sure feels like a black cat crossed my path with these units. Had a very good experience with Marantz audio until now. Had no plans to purchase home theater audio gear this year.

That's a total bummer. Sorry to hear that. I wonder if the slim form factor or small amp section of the NR series has anything to do with it. Were they getting enough cooling? I chose a Marantz due to their old reputation and I like the monolithic look. It's been running well for a couple of years now in a cabinet. I do have a thermostat controlled fan on it though. I learned that trick after frying two cable boxes in quick succession years ago.
Anyhow, best of luck with the Denon - they're very highly recommended. I would have chosen Denon if I followed people's advice, but I've always wanted a Marantz so I went with one this time. It replaced a 10 year old Pioneer that had HDMI issues.
Did you buy from accessories4less? They have the best prices. My Marantz was refurbished, but also half of what a new one would have cost. Otherwise I wouldn't have considered a $1000 receiver.

Did you buy from accessories4less? Considering that was Jimmy, I would bet on this.

Denon.com sells gear, its own refurbs, which have the same one year warranty as A4L, plus free shipping, full 60-day return policy, at the same price as A4L. So this time (x2) both sales went to Denon.com. And in my research, also discovered Costco.com is offering the Denon AVR-S750H as a new unit with an extra year warranty, at the same price as A4L and Denon.com are getting for their refurbs. I presume the reason Denon.com has that unit in its refurb inventory is Costco returns coming back. www.denon.com/en-us/specials

Yamaha is the core of my home theater. Built to last. I had a Yamaha reciever running my outdoor system from under the barbecue island for over 10 years. Not much rain but we have a steady marine environment. Although when i asked the AV installer of my whole house system what they recommend he said Marantz.

The NR1708 only three years ago -- the other way before that. Each was long out of warranty.

All electronics gear has a shelf life Part of what I like about some brands is that they have factory/authorized repair center support forever. My main system amplification is almost 30 years old now but went back to base in the last 5 years and is now as good as new. This stuff does not have to be disposable*. *video things are different. The changes in standards end up killing them prematurely. Part of the reason why I try to keep the analog and digital sides separate in my system.

The changes in standards end up killing them prematurely. Part of the reason why I try to keep the analog and digital sides separate in my system. If I sent the Marantz units back for service, it would take who knows how long and I'd get billed for the out-of-warranty parts and labor. And the systems would be out of commission while I was waiting. This is not critical high end stuff; it's every day home theater that is not really taxed too much -- so not difficult or too costly to replace. Also -- newer units have improved HDMI, wi-fi, and blue tooth built in, which facilitates set-up and streaming services without outboard gear. Mr. Natural says get the right tool for the job -- in these cases, lower end consumer electronics, heavily feature laden, will do the job just fine. The better gear is installed elsewhere for 2-channel music listening. These days, that's McIntosh electronics.

The 'names' of all the familiar Brands over the years seem to still carry their weight even though many if not all, have changed their manufacturing locations. Note the pic that has Pioneer products being made in China. My last Pioneer unit which by the way, I still have, was made in Japan and was a product of the late '80's. I've only had one other receiver since '73 and that's the current one pictured...somewhat . I do believe these days that electronics as well as other products that include automobiles, have a shelf life. Didn't used to be as I have audio components I bought back in '73 still in use and work just as good as they ever did. The old saying, 'They don't make'm like they used to' has never been more true, IMO. However, when I replaced my last receiver with my current one, the last one was going strong but, I decided it was time for an upgrade.

All electronics gear has a shelf life. While this is indisputable, some gear is built to last but most is built to a price point. I bought my Bryston amp and preamp back in the mid 80s specifically because of the 20 year warranty included with all their gear. I never had to use the warranty but I did return both pieces to the factory shortly before the warranty expired to deal with some minor issues -- the insulation on the power cable on the amp started to deteriorate and the balance pot on the preamp got noisy. Bryston fixed the issues and went through the amps and brought them back up to spec. I've not had any problems since -- and that was fifteen years ago. I don't expect them to last forever but it's looking like they'll outlast me.
