Played viola for one year in middle school and my best friend was playing string bass, and they needed one more so I switched to bass, and carried that all the way thru high school. Borrowed a friend's cheap-o classical to try and learn guitar in 10th grade (thanks to KISS and others!), but he decided he wanted to learn more and took it back, but it was a start! I didn't really progress on the string bass as much as I would have liked but basses are hard to move and we couldn't afford an instrument at home! Got an electric bass as my high school graduation present and then started working in a restaurant, 8 months later I had an electric guitar and started learning a bunch of songs on both! Got my brother into playing my bass as well so we could trade off after he got HIS guitar! 3 more years of basement bands and various roles as my brother and I kept switching off who was the bass player! I mostly practiced guitar, and played bass only to learn songs I was going to have to play! In the end I became THE bass player, my brother went into the Navy, and my first real gigging band had me on bass, a different friend on rhythm and vocals, and another guitarist on leads. Played bass thru the 80's and early 90's, moved back to the DC area and found a decent band that needed a bassist in like 2003. Been playing pretty steadily since then, with one diversion into playing guitar (with some leads!) that I quit in 2019 when I got offered a spot to play bass in a gigging band. And the funny thing is, when I go to Ebay or the web, I look for guitars. The bass is the tool of my trade. It works, I don't need a new one!
