Guy sure knows his way around a whammy bar...

I've tried and tried and tried to like Beck, including this clip. Different strokes...

I hear you LM: I like the above clip and most of his early stuff a lot, but find some of his more recent stuff less appealing. I especially dislike a certain shrill, warbley, distorted, "synthy-sounding" flutter which I believe he gets simply by flicking the whammy bar (which he sets up in a rather unusual way). That not withstanding, I still really admire the originality of his playing and especially like his use of volumetric dynamics (loud/soft passages).

I like the first track in the link. I think its a pretty unique approach and kudos to him for not being yet another aging pentatonic God.
No disrespect to Clapton and Page. 😄

Beck is still searching, which is what is cool. He was always doing micro-tonal stuff even on a Les Paul, but took it to another level. Like Gilmour, he also knows how to use the bar in a subtle way....I have friends who say they have no use for a tremelo bar, and on the odd chance they use it, I see why they shouldn't lol.

True dat. Digging that clip above. His famed machine-music albums, not so much. Here's what I like about JB. Sorry Eric, no match. 😏

One of my favorite JB clips, MJ. Just wish the audio/video quality was better, but it was shot a LONG time ago.

Would've appreciated more talk from Beck, less from blathering music critics, but still worth a listen, IMHO:

Same all-out and take no prisoners energy with the Telly, just without a trem. Even more obvious against EC's *conservative* performance. 😎
JB for a rainy day. More talk, less music - some guy..

Jeez, how old was Tal Wilkenfeld in that vid? She looks about 12.

wow! watching some of these clips. It's like there are players with better technique, speed-wise, two-hand, sweep, etc...but nowhere near the phrasing and dynamics...distinctive tone too. Most instrumental guitarists aren't this accessible to the non-guitar community.
