There's a section in the NY Times called "Wirecutter," where they do extensive testing to find "the best" of all kinds of things: headphones, electric toothbrushes, you name it. Today it was office chairs. The office chair that I'm sitting in at the moment, (unknown brand) cost me under $100 ten years ago. It creaks, it groans, it wobbles, it has duct tape around the threadbare arms, and a couple of inflatable pillows soften the now cratered seat ..... but it's comfortable.
The one that Wirecutter decided was the Best is called the Steelcase Gesture and is available from Amazon for just over $1,000. "....the Gesture has continued to be a favorite since we first recommended it in 2015. It’s one of the most comfortable, supportive, and durable office chairs we’ve ever tested: Everything, from the back support to the quality fabric to the dependable adjustment knobs, has stood the test of time. The Gesture also comes in the widest range of fabrics and other finishing options of the chairs we tested, so you can customize its appearance for your workspace."
What bronco you ridin' while cruising cyberspace? Would you spend $1,000 for an office chair?

Herman Miller Aeron. Super comfy.
I used to do office 'system furniture' installations and removals as a side hustle. Steelcase, American Seating, and Herman Miller were the three huge brands in that business at the time.

I'm sitting in my leather La-Z-Boy. I'm sure it was over $1,000 but I don't recall exactly.
I also picked up a La-Z-Boy at Habitat for Humanity for $50. It was brand-new. I asked them if they were sure it was the right price and they affirmed. I didn't ask a second time.

Maybe $200. Maybe $300. Don't remember. A year or two ago. No animals were harmed in the construction of my chair, so before long the faux leather arms, back, and seat may start pealing.

I remember about 15 years ago we bought an orthopaedic office chair for one of the guys with a bad back. It cost about £800 when we bought it, and I "inherited" it when he left and used it right up until we started working from home. I probably should have brought it with me.

my office chair and desk came from my office and were given to me when i retired. i have no idea of monetary value, but there is significant personal value.
i was looking at the upholstery wondering how many naugies it takes to cover a naugahide (sic) upholstered desk chair.

Some comfy leather office chair from Staples. But usually our reclining loveseat. Like right now.
Ask me what I’m wearing.

Those chairs don’t LOOK comfortable.
Mine is a $300 Serta with memory foam.
I tend to replace my office chair every couple of years. Maybe that wouldn’t be necessary if I invested in a better one.

Lazy Boy, about $600 if I remember correctly. It needs to be re-cushioned or replaced soon.

An old dining chair that is several decades old.
The intense gaming world created a market for super expensive chairs. I guess if you're trying to make a living playing games on Twitch for 10 hours a day you want something good. I think most of those end up in the $500ish range, though.

Another Herman Miller Aeron user here. Pricey, but worth every penny.
I got mine off of Craigslist for $300 about 15 years ago. A steal!

Yes. More. My wife's idea. It was "essential" to complement the two sofas we got at the same time. Just a "tub" chair, but a nice design, covered in a Liberty print the maker had to order from Italy. That said, it's perfect for moving into the ideal position to listen to the hifi. In my defence, we replaced the two sofas I bought in 1989 and the high end adjustable chair in my office was £10. We seem to do a mix of impulsive extravagance and thrifty recycling.

A grand for an office chair is just a wee bit too much. We use wirecutter from time to time...at least take into consideration their review, but don't always follow their recommendation.
I did upgrade my office chair when I was working from home a lot though. The one I had didn't have enough padding so I was sitting on a pillow. That didn't really help matters so off to the office supply store I went. The one I chose was memory foam and about $200. It worked out very well and we sometimes grab it if we need an extra chair to watch a movie or a football game or something. It's actually quite luxurious.
I can't imagine how nice a $1000 office chair must be....

I can't imagine how nice a $1000 office chair must be.... This thread has me thinking exactly that. I work at a desk and especially now with Court still being virtual (although they are preparing to reopen), I am basically in my chair 6-8 hours a day. It’s something I don’t mind spending money on, but I would be hesitant to buy a $1,000 office chair without giving it a “test drive” first. Something to consider when it’s time to replace my chair again.
