I have about 11,000 miles on my first brand new "modern" car, which is a 2018 Chevy Trax. So far, everything is working fine, but for all y'all of the modern auto era I have a question.
I keep reading about the chip shortage that has bogged down new car production. If the chips are in short supply for production, are they also in short supply for repairs?
I'm picturing a scenario where I go to the dealer with an engine fault of some kind, and I'm told that I need a Nox Fuel Chubby computer chip. But they won't have any in stock for the next six months. Anybody had a "cupboard is bare" scenario at the repair shop lately?

Luckily modern cars are like a windoz machine. When the various computers lock up a reboot usually fixes it.
Not sure about GM but there is software to perform this at home for Fords, ForScan. it's free.

I've seen the modules that plug into a jack in the passenger compartment, but just to interpret the "check engine" message that lights up.

No other car manufacturer [that I know of] gives you the ability to change parameters in many of your Ford vehicles functions. Forscan does. Just to be clear, Forscan is not a product of Ford. It is aftermarket software that can be utilized from a laptop via the diagnostic connection on the vehicle using an OBD2 dongle which must be purchased and are fairly cheap. Forscan is one of the best products I've used on my own vehicles.

What does a "reboot" entail on a modern car? You plug the laptop in, highlight the offending module and hit the reset button.

Here's yer "chip off the old block": Cool! So much easier to get at the crank and rods with that handy window in the engine block!
