A friend said the A string on his J has less volume than the others on one of his recently installed Bartolini pickups, but is fine on the other one. He said it aligns properly between the pole pieces but gets louder if he moves it directly over one of them.

Has he checked his pickup height in the spot in question?

Are the pickups located in the correct orientation? Bridge - treble and Neck - bass
From their website: Distance between pickups and strings Print Modified on: Thu, Jul 11, 2019 at 8:44 AM
There is no specific measurement for the distance between the top of a Bartolini pickup and the bottom of the strings. The reason being: you cannot get too close, at least not as far as the magnets and coils are concerned. You, however, can get so close that the strings will hit the pickup when you play and this distance changes with styles and individuals. Start with the outside strings about 4mm or 3/16th of an inch away from the neck pickup. If the strings stay clear of the pickups as you play then raise the pickups until the strings start to strike the pickup as you play, play hard. Then back the pickup off bit by bit until all is clear. Adjust the bridge pickup for even volume output. If you can’t get it loud enough before the strings start to hit it back off the neck pickup again a bit.

The first thing to do when there's a volume discrepancy across the strings is to replace the offending string. You need to rule out the string as a possible cause--because that is actually a common cause of this issue.

This is why I prefer "blade"-style pups or ones with individually-adjustable pole pieces.

It sounds like they are going to send him a replacement.
