I went through chemo back in 2011. If they want to put in a port, let them do it -- makes the sessions much easier on you. That was my experience. If you get a chemo port, maybe keep a bandage over it so it doesn't get infected. I had a chemo port in 2016 that got infected. Ever watch those medical dramas on TV? One doctor is always telling another doctor "Don't do that--the patient will get sepsis and die." When my chemo port was infected, I got sepsis. But here I am. BTW I did get encouraging words from JimmySee when we were both on the old FDP, and I appreciated them very much. HI Henry -- thank you for your kind words, and I am so very sorry to hear about your experience with the port. I had my port in my upper chest throughout my chemo, and for a year after that, in case it was needed again (it was not). As a part of the treatment, it was cleaned and flushed regularly by my doctors at the oncological practice affiliated with St. John's hospital in Santa Monica.

Hey Jimmy, my port was also in my upper chest, but it came out when I was diagnosed with the sepsis. I now have a crater in my upper chest where the port was. It was only used maybe twice of my 6 months of chemo. All clear since then.
Maybe Jhawker can have the same good fortune we had with chemo.

My oncologist said a port was not needed with the chemotherapy I am getting. I think it is because the chemo is not targeted at a particular mass or tumor. My cancer is already Stage 4 and is spread around quite a bit.

I had to postpone the chemotherapy due to supply as it was back-ordered for almost a week. I had my 1st infusion finally the next Friday and was extremely ill from it over the weekend. So I went to the hospital where I tested positive for COVID. They admitted me because of the cancer and Chemotherapy. Needless to say I have been pretty miserable. The wife tested positive too the next day. No visitors. We both had all 3 doses of the antivirus. The wife is recovered already and the hospital sent me home Tuesday the 19th. Talk about your series of unfortunate events! The wife recovered quickly and gets out of quarantine Wednesday, I have to stay isolated until Saturday. It’s times like these to have great friends and family! The wife is fully recovered. Postponed my chemotherapy until at least next week. Doctors said the antivirus saved us both. Wife from the hospital and me from my weakened immune system from the chemotherapy. She recovered in about 3 days and I may be ready to to go back at it next week.

We heard a lot about immune-compromised when all the talk of the third jab boosters began. You are sure right in that category. When I was taking my chemo, there was no covid to worry about, but I was advised to avoid contact with people. We were living in Santa Monica, so easy to take long walks in the neighborhood, and I'd simply cross the street if I saw anyone approaching.

Jhawkr, I'm saddened by your diagnosis. You've had more than your share of medical issues over the years.
I lost a friend to it and he also had your spirit and temperament. What he didn't have was access to high quality medical care. It sounds like you do. I hope they succeed in beating this or extending your time for as long as you wish.
I'm a retired project engineer and I remember many of your spirited insightful post on the FDP. Your replies were usually spot on and loaded with factual information. A lot of good threads back there.
I'd love to see you beat this and if anyone can, it's you.
Mojoe heading your way!

Update: October 30, 2021
The wife and I elected to go with Home Hospice due to the terminal stage 4 Cancer. Hospice moved in last night with a a wheel chair and other durable good goods. My hospital bed she be here Monday. My nurse will be out 3 times a week and facilities guy and nurses aid at least once a week. They filled up my medicine coffers and were ready. Plenty of anti-nausea meds, Morphine and Oxycodone. They will be training my wife to load my siringes and whatnot when one of the Hospice people isn’t near. The goal is preventing pain and discomfort.
