A guy I work with is cleaning out his in-laws house (she died a few months ago) --- the house is sold and he just needs to get rid of stuff.
He found a guitar (still in the case) and a few "speakers".
He was going throw it all out, but he remembered that I play guitar...so he offered it all to me.
He said that the case says "Fender" on the outside....oh boy - this could be a huge score... Originally he couldn't recall the brand name on the "speakers", but later recalled "Hartke". Ok, so now I'm thinking that there's really a couple of bass amps and a bass guitar. Still..."Fender".
Here's the "catch" - the case is locked, and he doesn't have a key.
Any idea how to get this opened without ruining the guitar...and the case? I'm going to try a few of the Fender keys I have...but if those don't work, do you have any suggestions?

No but I'm dying to find out what's in the case!

Locksmith. It should be a simple lock to pick.

So, assuming it is a bass guitar...being that it's in a case, I figure it's probably a MIA or MIJ instrument, right? I don't think someone would buy a case for a MIM guitar. Ah, the speculation. I should have it in my possession Tuesday or Wednesday night.

As long as we are still waiting for the 'reveal', did your friend have any idea who actually owned/used the instrument? It might help fuel the speculation here.

Those guitar cases can't be hard to unlock, even a good one. Take to a lock smith or possibly a luggage repair shop. You might even try just poking around with a paper clip. There's a youtube guy, "Lockpickinglawyer". I watched some of his clips, hilarious and amazing (and a little scary).

You can do it with a paper clip and a small screwdriver.

As long as we are still waiting for the 'reveal', did your friend have any idea who actually owned/used the instrument? It might help fuel the speculation here. Update: To answer the above question: It belonged to his mother-in-law's brother. He didn't want the guitar or amps. And no offense to you MIM owners that keep your guitar in a case. I just figured that MIM guitars came with a gig bag instead of a case. ...but here's more: on Sunday night he texts me a picture of a guitar, with the words, "Another one, this one is a CF Martin!" In order to not sound too excited I texted back, "Yeah, I'll take it if you don't want it" He responded that his wife went to the house to get some items, she found the Martin and she sold it on Facebook. We work about 15 miles from the Martin factory (which is in Nazareth, PA). And so I figure he knew that the Martin is worth some $$$. This made me think 2 things: 1) If there was a Martin at the house, the Fender locked in the case might be a high-end instrument also. 2) He might start to have 2nd thoughts about giving away the Fender. He said he might go to the house tomorrow (Wednesday) night, so I hope to have some more info about 24 hours from now. I'll report back when/if anything transpires.

Ok, just got back from picking up the guitar!
First, let me say - I believe that the "CF Martin" acoustic guitar was actually a Sigma (Martin's import brand). The guitar is in fair condition. He indicated that he'd be willing to sell it. He said that he and his wife looked it up and it could be worth about $850...said they got offers at a lower price, but nobody showed up to buy it. I had no interest. I have an acoustic that I like...and I rarely play it. I wasn't going to spend money on a guitar that I had no interest in.
Now, for the main event! ...I walk in and he had the guitar/case up on a work bench in his garage. I was totally expecting to see a large case which would contain a bass guitar (due to the Hartke equipment that was also at the house). But no! It was a more recent Fender USA rectangular case, similar to what my custom shop Strat lives in.
He asked me to bring the keys I had to my cases...but before I even tried the keys I said, "let's see if it's even locked"...and it wasn't! haha. I open the case, and there it is!
... a Charvel made by Jackson...wha - wha.
It looked very much like a guitar I gave away at a gig many many years ago. It was also pretty dirty, not in the best of shape...but not totally beat. I'll have to do some research to see if I can assign a value to it. He "indicated" that he expected me to perhaps give him some cash for it if I wanted it. That's "sort of" fair: but considering at first he said he was going to throw it out...eh. And if it would have turned out to be some vintage Strat, of course I would disclose that and we would then discuss money.
But THIS guitar? Eh, I don't think it's worth much and I'm not terribly interested in it. If it was a full-out upper end shred guitar from the 80's I might be more interested. But this guitar?...I recall spending maybe $300 for the one I bought all those years ago.
So there it is - sorry to disappoint you all.
Charvel by Jackson CX291...whatever that means.

CX291 are nothing special and posibly worth no more than a few hundred in perfect shape. But made in Japan and quite cool.

Yeah, it was a let down for sure. It was actually his brother-in-law's...not the brother of the mother-in-law.
The guitar was in pretty disgusting shape...but I cleaned it up today. The pickup selector switch is messed up - I may need to replace it.
The neck is birdseye maple and has a nice shape. The fretboard is rosewood and cleaned up nicely...and I cleaned up the frets. It's actually a nice neck!
This could end up being a pretty solid guitar. Nothing special, but solid and playable.
