I have a 13 year old grandson who's interested in guitar. I am wondering what is a good starter, keeping in mind it may get tossed in a few months. My 1st was a Wards airline that smelled like fresh sawn plywood. Total POS. What say ye?

I would say a Yamaha or Ibanez. Both deliver good bang for the buck at the low end of the spectrum. Set it up, to include nut slots (if necessary).

I've heard that Yamaha makes the best "cheap" acoustics.

My beginner guitar was an Alvarez, back in '74. It was a very good guitar for what I paid for it.
And they still make good beginner guitars. The Regent Series is their absolute bottom of the line. I think I would go a step up from those.

Yamaha, Alvarez and Epiphone all make decent entry level guitars in the $300ish range.

The Yamaha CSF1M parlor size that Hushnel recommended to me several years back is a gem. I replaced the nut, saddle and end pins but not a necessary thing, just what I do. You can always make it conditional and if the kids quits take it back. I find myself playing mine more than my Martin.

I agree with Leftee and Mike the Marksman on Yahamas. I've always like their entry-level guitars (more than their higher end models, to be honest).

In the used market you may be able to find a decent instrument for around the same price as a new beginner. A few years back I picked up a sold wood Cremona classical for $80 on Craigs List.
My first was an electric semi-acoustic Framus bass that I played 4 years before I got an amplifier. We lived in Germany at the time. The CSF1M is a nice acoustic right off the shelf.

Hey I went to guitar center and found a nice Washburn for less than $200. Looks good, plays good and sounds good.

That’s great. Best Christmas of my life was finding the Framus under the Christmas tree back in 1964, and still playing it.
