The chorus unit in my Hammond RT-3 organ has gotten to where the sound is kind of choppy and not smooth as it used to be. I know there was someone on the old site who had rebuilt an RT-2. I don't remember who it was but I am wondering if they are still here and might have an idea of what I need to look at to fix it.

I'm no expert, but it sounds like voltages have become unstable in the signal-control area of the circuit. I would pop it open and use magnification to examine every electrolytic (polarized) capacitor. Look for bulging or leakage; if any cap is bulged or leaking, desolder it and replace it. They will look like this:  NOTE: Silastic is a silicone-based adhesive that is often used to help stabilize tall or heavy components and prevent them from vibrating. Over time, vibations can fatigue and crack soldder connections. It serves as a glue to hold things in place. It's not always white, but that's the most common color. If you need to remove a cap that has silastic on it, carefully trim it away with an Xacto knife, and then desolder and remove the bad cap. Be careful not to cook the PC board's solder pads. A hotter iron prevents this (counterintuitive, but true). |
