I'm about to do a body transplant on my Jaguar. I had MJT finish this in Shoreline Gold with minimal relicing and some finish checking. I was a dummy and put a small dent in the wood below the left bridge thimble as shown here. I was using my soft little guitar mallet, but I guess my aim was way off for one whack. I know this is an aged finish, but this dent is in a weird spot that bothers me a tiny bit. Is it fixable, or best to just leave it alone? I can live with it. ...I opted to do copper shielding tape vs. the traditional brass plates simply because it was cheaper and I enjoy installing copper shielding tape for some reason.  |

If it was me I'd leave it since it has minor relicing and checking already you just added a little bit of your own stamp to the job.
I mean sure I'd be little peeved that I dented the guitar. But, I would move on after a few hours. But that's me
BTW really nice shielding work, thats extremely neat work

OK, I will leave it. I didn't mention that the finish is a bit cracked there and if you look down when in playing position it's more noticeable. I won't try to swell the dent out, but can the tiny finish cracks be melted/dissolved easily?
...I go into zen mode when I'm shielding. The stuff I use is really thin and sticky so it conforms nicely. I had a another small roll of some thick copper tape that was very difficult to work with, and it didn't stick worth anything.

I wouldn't. If the color is close to the top you run a risk of going through then you'll be REALLY unhappy, so you'd have to be confident you could do a superglue drop fill very neatly with very little sanding. Even then it might darken and still be visible.
Also, given its location it is going to be far less noticeable with hardware and strings on as all of that stuff casts shadows and creates distractions. That stuff always looks its worst when the instrument is apart and under good work lights. Once it is together you'll likely feel very different about it.

Well, I finished this a week or two ago. You can see my hammer ding in the photo but it doesn't bother me at all at this point. This body had an angled neck pocket so I didn't need to shim it like the "donor" guitar needed. The donor was a Squier Classic Vibe 70's Jaguar. I'm very impressed with the quality of the CV series, but I needed to personalize this a bit more. I love the way it turned out with the antique white plastic bits. I put an AVRI trem and metal plates on as well. The Squier metal plates were very slightly different so I changed them out to AV specs. They were nickel plated though, compared the chrome on the American parts.  |
