I'm the full time lead singer in my current hard-rock/heavy metal band; and in my other band, sing lots of backups and handle lead vox on 8-9 songs during a 3-set night. I was trying to explain to my guitar player that while I'm not the most technically proficient bassist (looking at you, Mr. Geddy Lee!), I feel like I'm a pretty rare bird in handling bass and vocals for a full 3-set night, so figured I'd check in here and see what y'all are doing...

My singing is OK, but I only occasionally sing lead. I have always had a problem recalling lyrics. I'm just not a verbal-oriented person. Rather than screw up lyrics onstage, I let others sing lead. I can sing harmony. One of my favorite band gigs was backing up a country girl singer. I would just vocally hop in and out on lines that were begging for a harmony part.

I sing lead often and sing harmony when I'm not singing lead. Been doing it since I began in a band in 1968.

I sing in the shower. That's it. Well...also when I'm alone in my truck, driving.
Pretty ironic, since lyrics are very important to me, in terms of whether or not I enjoy hearing a song. Even when a tune is musically well-written/clever, etc., I have trouble ignoring cliched or inane lyrics, which can be so distracting that I can't enjoy the music.

I played guitar in most of the bands I have played in but played bass and was the second lead singer in a couple of them. In one of the bands the other lead singer also played some guitar and keyboards so we split the duties about 50/50. I have always sang either lead or background vocals in every band I have ever played in.

Steve! I agree. Glad to see you here. BTW, I sold my Line6 Variax 700 and picked up a 705. I don't use it all the time, but the Kay upright emulation works great when I need an upright sound when playing in an 18-piece big band.

No way! My singing would strip paint off the walls. People would run for the doors

I am somewhere in between your last 2.
I used to do all of the singing.

Over the years I’ve been in groups where I did very little background singing and I’ve had my own groups where I did maybe 35% lead singing and a lot of harmony stuff when we did things like Alabama tunes, Temptations, Everly Bros, Heart, CCR and a lot I can’t recall anymore. At 75 yo the voice ain’t quite what it once was but I can still do a good Willy Nelson or Jim Morrison cover.

Do you sing during live performances? Not if I don't have to.....

I feel like I'm a pretty rare bird in handling bass and vocals for a full 3-set night I think you are correct. I sang several lead vocals while playing rhythm guitar years ago; but I don't particularly want to sing and find it much harder to do while playing bass. In a pinch, I could sing a few songs with simple bass parts but, fortunately, every band I've been in as a bass player has had at least 2 good singers, so occasional backups is all I needed to do.
Not sure where that puts me on the poll.

For some reason I was one of the very few in my region singing and playing bass back 50 years ago. It got me into a few bands. I had been playing lead and singing a few years before that and had learned to riff and sing simultaneously.
I was lucky enough to work with a great vocalist/guitarist when I played for a living. That meant mostly background vocals with about a quarter of the songs I sang lead with an occasional duet.
