Boredom has struck and I'm doing a refin on my Guitar Mill Tele. I've done rattle can lacquer on necks before, but never a body. A 3 pc alder body already finished in shellac. I used maybe a half can of Mohawk blonde lacquer and already got it mostly opaque, which is fine since its not a particularly attractive piece of wood. I've now done maybe 5 or 6 coats of Mohawk clear coat, starting with a mist coat and getting wetter with subsequent coats. I've used maybe 2/3 of the can.
I keep seeing reference to 2.5 to 3 cans of clear and find that almost astonishing. I'm not looking for brand spanking new since I didn't fully address all of the surface imperfections, plus the neck hardware and plastic isn't new. I'm ok with "closet relic" without any deliberate attempt to age any attributes.
So...can I get away with 1 can of clear?

I put 6 coats of clear on my Strat when I refinished it many years ago but it wasn't lacquer. It turned out great.

I still would like to wet sand when done, my concern is burn through to the thin blonde toner finish.

You can if you don’t sand. If you get a descent clear from one can you could go straight to polishing and skip sanding. Just don’t get overly exuberant with the polishing.
If you’re going to sand, a minimum of two cans is what I’d say.

Right now I have a pretty decent gloss on the edges, but the front and back are not really anywhere I'd go straight to polish. A little orange peel, inconsistent sheen, etc.

Sounds like you’re buying another can.
I’ve been using Mohawk a lot this year. I like it a lot. It’s also been less expensive than Stewy or Reranch.

Mohawk has a variety of clear lacquers. I just bought another that boasts less orange peel/less work. We'll see how that works out. I just wish I didn't have to put so many coats on since I like the wood to breathe.
😄 haha, just kiddin'

Groovy
When I first started using the Mohawk I was ordering from Amazon and it shipped directly from Mohawk. They got a couple orders wrong (satin instead of gloss) and I found I was in direct contact with them. They were great to work with and I ended up with the gloss I ordered and two free cans of satin.

I didn't look deep into Amazon but saw a seller there asking twice what I paid at Klingspor's. They were a little slow to ship (about a week to get out the door), but I wasn't in a hurry. Also found coupon on line for $5 off.

Thanks for the linkage. I just ordered 6 cans of ultra-flo from them.
That’s kinda a dubious name, tho.

I also ordered some micro mesh from them.

Seriously… I’ve been using the ultra flo with nice results. It’s my fave.

[ahem] This is nitrocellulose acetate lacquer. And it's available at Lowe's for about $7 per can. I've had people swear it's not nitro--but they're simply ign'int Stooge-Mac fanboiz. All they have to do is read the SDS for the ingredients. You can too, right here: www.minwax.com/document/SDS/en/US/027426152007

Thanks Peegoo, good to know for future reference. My Lowes app shows they're charging $9.68 locally so the Mohawk is still the better deal. Either way, this doesn't bode well for the Stewg, lol.
I initially tried Reranch but it appears they're not operating anymore. For the past month or so I've gotten a "we're closed to catch up on orders" banner any time I've put something in the cart. Don't know if it's a supply chain issue or what.

I tried some Rustoleum Lacquer from HD and it was pretty inferior. It just didn’t build coats as efficiently as the Mohawk. Iirc it was @$4/ can.
Thanks for the tip on the Minwax. Good to know.
