I've seen some PRS tops with a similar color, and they looked amazing. If I was playing around with dyes, it would be on my list of things to try, too. My guess is the maple has to be bleached first to get it to look right, since the lighter parts have a sort of greyish look to them.
I'm not normally a fan for bright yellow, but I've seen some canary yellow dyes look amazing, too.
I noticed ebony boards on those guitars. Is that a standard feature on this line now?

I'll get started on mine this week. It won't be a flame top. This body is sugar pine. I've been mulling over what to do with this one and this will be a cool thing to try.

You can get real real close to this look at home with simple tools and a little care. Food coloring (diluted with water) is a fantastic wood dye/stain because of the small pigment particles and low cost. Looky here for some tips:
Paul talks about how too much stain or water can cause the stain to migrate too far and if you have a 'self-binding' (the exposed edge of the top wood), one way to mitigate this problem is to first use a small paint brush to apply a clear sealer around the edge.
Look here for that technique. It's referred to as "isolator," and it's just a cut mix of clear polyurethane.
The guys in these demos are using water to prep the wood for the stain because they're using water-based or alcohol stains. If you're using an oil-based stain, you cannot use water; mineral spirits or white spirit work great.

Food coloring will work,but will fade rapidly when exposed to light. Analine dyes are better but will fade,especially if exposed to sunlight. The newer metal dyes are much better at retaining their color. I've used the ones made by Homestead Finishing with great results. ( homesteadfinishingproducts.com/transtint-liquid-dyes/ ). They have the added benefit of being both water and alcohol compatible. |

Ebony is a fantastic fretboard wood, but it is often prone to checking. Don't allow it to dry out.

My attempt at this is turning out pretty cool, or so says I. I’ve got shellac on it and should be able to spray some clear tomorrow.
Being sugar pine I took advantage of the wood’s characteristics which I believe adds to the effect.
