In an earlier topic, I told the story of consigning 17 guitars to a local dealer -- which went a long way to emptying the closet.
Nearly all have sold.
Now I'm wrestling with whether to consign one more.
It's a 1971 tele, in quite good condition for its age -- purchased second-hand by me with a G&G black tolex case back in 1980 (found the shop receipt in the case).
Really, have not played it much at all in decades since. These days, I've got two other teles I've held on to -- a current Players series and a high end Squier pine body.
I've hauled the '71 around with me from coast to coast in moves since 1980, so this decision is more difficult than the others.
What would you do? Don't really need the cash. But really, don't really need this tele either.
And it has felt good, overall, to downsize the closet.

Pick it up and play it, you will know what to do.

In my humble opinion it’s cool to keep one that you don’t want to part with. My LP Traditional is that guitar for me.
I believe the most important thing is to not leave a gigantic heap behind.
Maybe start playing that Tele again!

My personal opinion has always been if I don’t want to play it, it goes.
That’s why I’m down to two guitars I don’t play.

My first real guitar was a 71 Tele and I foolishly traded it away in the late 70's.
So you could donate it to me to soothe that old wound. 🤣

I'm a Tele guy...it would be hard for me to sell a Tele.

If you haven't played it much in decades, move it along. That's a sweet old guitar that deserves to get played.
I just downsized too, down to three that I love. It is quite liberating.

Here I am with mine, mid 70's, around the time *I* invented Grunge, lol.

If you haven't played it much over decades, then sell it. Someone else will play, take care of and enjoy having it.

I had a bass stolen last year. So now, on top of agonizing over the "I don't really play this or that one any more" aspect, I worry about the little-used ones getting ripped off, leaving me to think, "dang, I knew I should've sold that!"
This thread is a good reminder for me to downsize, myself.

I'm down to 2, My LesPaul that I'll be buried with and an Ovation acoustic that I cannot play due to the stupid round back. But it was a gift, so I keep it.

Didn't take the '71 tele in for consignment -- decided I did not need the ca$h, and once it's gone, it's gone. But stopped at the shop yesterday to pick up a Pro Tone Deluxe Reverb and had a good discussion with the manager. His view is early 70's teles were not worth much until recently, but now the pre-CBS guitars have pretty much all disappeared into collections -- he suggests holding onto my '71 for a few more years before selling. Could see higher prices for these.
Anyway, it's no burden, and we all have stuff we wish we'd held on to.

I wonder how long I'll have to hang onto my 85 Contemporary Strat for it to start increasing in value!

Update ...> 13 of 17 sold. Used the credit from three to purchase a Deluxe Reverb Tone Master amp; check for the other ten on the way. Very pleased with the job the dealer did with my stuff. The others will sell in due course.

I do love the brown tolex though That's well documented elsewhere -- different speaker, and firmware adjustment to remove the so-called "bright cap" in the Deluxe Reverb, a mod preferred by pedals. I prefer the black amp sound, but I do not use pedals. For me, it's one amp, one cord, one guitar, and one wanker at the other end.

A Tele guy too.
Have four of 'em. All great guitars and I love each one.
However, my kids and wife want nothing to do with 'em and as I approach my 7th decade, been giving some thought to thinning the herd. Not sure I want to deal with BS of selling a few outright, so I am considering consigning a few to a well known local dealer.

I had great success and was treated fairly, but my local dealer has national reach.

I have never owned a REAL Tele but I have a 62 SG Custom I'll never part with. I love the sound of Teles I just don't like the look of them since I am so shallow. I do have a Tele copy that I like the sound of. Being the owner of 15 guitars I can't imagine getting rid of any of them....yet. I have each and every one of them for a particular application and there are no duplicates. I do quite a bit of recording for myself and others so having a wide variety of sounds available to me is a huge asset. There are a few other guitars I'd like to have in my arsenal and will probably add at some point. so, no. I wouldn't sell it unless you have to.
