After commenting in the professor’s post, I did some research. In fact, I do have short fingers, I just looked it up. The average length of an adult male's hand is 7.6 inches — measured from the tip of the longest finger to the crease under the palm.
Measuring the same way for Medium 8.5-9” and large 9.5-10 glove size. Extra small would be 7” My longest finger is 6 7/8”, from the tip of the longest finger to the crease under the palm.

Huh. I always thought I had smallish hands, but I measured and they are 8". I do have small feet for someone that's 6'4"; I wear an 11.5 boot, but w i d e. There may be a duck somewhere in my family lineage that influenced my genetic composition. Have you seen Redd Volkaert's hands up close? They look like catcher's mitts.

Ever seen arm wrestler Jeff Dabe? He's like real life Popeye.
My fingers are pretty short. My hand is a little over 7 and a half inches, which is around average, but my palms make up most of it.

Interesting. 7 3/4" for me.
The best guitar player from my HS died in his early 50s. I went to his visitation and noticed his fingers, crossed upon his chest. He had very short and stubby fingers. I noted that, and learned that you didn't have to have long, slender Robert Cray (ever see his hands?) fingers to be a good guitar player.

7.75 for me. I know they are just too small to palm a basketball.
Wish my feet were smaller (14).

8", here. I guess that means my hands are "average", then.
So why is my playing sub-par?

Jimi had huge hands. He could wrap his thumb all the way over the strings...with his fingers all the way over the strings.

I always noticed how long Jimi’s hands and fingers were. I’ve never seriously considered that finger length would have much to do with my playing, but long fingers would certainly make playing chords a bit cleaner. On top of small hands my fingers are pretty thick. Getting three fingers down for an A, I have to stack them like a D, even on a classical’s wider neck.
I guess we all have certain hurdles we must overcome to get to the level we can be satisfied with.

Other "long-fingered" players: •Chester Burnett (AKA "Howlin' Wolf")
•Clapner Vai might have the longest fingers of all (seen here with Holdsworth):

'Tis better to HAVE short fingers than BE short of fingers.
(While y'all are doing all this measuring, take a look at the ratio of your index finger length to ring finger length. Why? Ask the Google.)

7.58" here I noticed a long time ago that most of the good guitar players had long slender fingers, unlike my short, relatively stubby ones. I have trouble squashing my fingers between the frets to play chords up the neck, can't stretch to reach all those fancy jazz chords or play with my thumb over the neck. A few years ago I found out why. I was around at a friend's place, sitting at his kitchen table drinking coffee, and his teenage son was there tapping away at a laptop computer. I happened to look at his hands and noticed that the section between the palm and first joint of his fingers, the proximal phalanx, was longer than with my fingers. I did a comparative study with everyone I know and found that my fingers and thumbs are between a quarter and half an inch shorter than they should be because I have that shortened section. It also explains where I was never able to bowl legspin very well when playing cricket. If it wasn't for that I coulda been a contender !

7.5"
I think the length of my fingers are disproportionate for my palms, which are a bit meaty. My wife makes fun of my thumbs, which she says would be suitable transplants for her big toes.

8 1/4 here, but when jazz guitarist Tal Farlow played here, everyone lined up on break to meet him and compare hand sizes mine almost looked like baby hands compared to his. there's a reason they called him "the octopus"

I came across that in my research. My ring finger is a good bit longer than my index finger about and eighth of an inch shorter than my middle finger.

A little over 7 7/8ths here.
Sadly this is not the first time I've measured my hand with regards to the guitar.
The first was in high school sometime after discovering Jimi Hendrix, probably due to the old forum. Luckily the next guitar genre journey involved Andres Segovia who had stubby little nubs so once I realized I'd never play as nicely as either the pressure subsided..

Eight inches. Oh wait, we're talking about hands? .... eight inches. Funny how people perceive this differently all the time. I often hear guys say "I need a small guitar neck because I have small hands" and their hands aren't small at all. Then you see some woman at 5'0" play just fine on a 1 3/4" neck. All about where you put the thumb. I've always been amused by this picture of Andre the Giant's paw: i.redd.it/0ki2ifh3jwe31.jpg

Measured as stated in the OP, I'm right at average but the finger is less than 50% of the total.
