During the 2019-2020 season, bushfires down there have now consumed about 6 million hectares, nearly 3 times what the 2018 NorCal fires consumed. And no end in sight.

I couldn't believe the size of the area it covered. Absolutely devastating.
The local news used it as an excuse to show people giving koalas water out of a bottle, which was adorable.

There are none down my way.
A bit of rain would help, hasn't rained for weeks now.

This is an indication of the sheer volume of smoke being generated by these fires:

Best wishes to all down under. Haven't seen Mick Reid or Steve Smith on the new platform, hope they are well.

this is truly awful...but it makes me wonder before the modern age, how people dealt with fires..because you know they happened...
eventually they just burn out and life starts over

They are actually part of the naturally cycle (though the magnitude of the current bushfires in Oz makes them somewhat of an anomaly).
Fire actually stimulates the seeds of some plants to germinate.

Been lucky so far here, but the smoke haze from the Victorian fires has been covering our sky for days even though there's quite a stretch of water between Tassie and the mainland. Having toured the country fairly extensively, I have friends and acquaintances that have been affected or are in danger of same. My heart goes out to them.

I'm praying for that country, it's people, it's wildlife, and it's flora and fauna too.

Sounds like they have it worse than CA.
