We just got in the door from our annual New Year’s Day Dinner. We’ve been going to the same dinner club/steakhouse for bacon-wrapped tenderloins and lobster tails for the last 35 years. There was one year I wasn’t gigging so we went on New Year’s Eve…big mistake because all the drunken amateurs were out and about. Just sitting here and enjoying a Macallan 12 yr on the rocks.

We got an air fryer for Christmas from MIL so wife is making some broccoli/chicken/potatoes to try it out. It’s probably the last 60 degree evening for a while so I’m on the back porch playing guitar drinking red wine and waiting for the storms to roll in.

Thanks Laker, Have you ever been to Schwarz Supper Club in St. Anna ? Yes, one of the strangest dining experiences for us. My wife ordered trout (or some such fish) and it was brought out burned to a heated steak platter and my sautéed mushrooms were straight out of a pickled mushrooms jar. Never went back. In that area I believe the Altoona in New Holstein is a good visit. I’m very familiar with that area as I grew up spending my summers at Cedar Lake a few miles east of St Anna.

Laker that's a bummer, we've been there 3 times and had great food. I'll look into Altoona.

One of our favorite Mexican places was offering a feast for $100. Two quesadillas, nachos, chips & guac, rice and beans, and chicken, shrimp and steak fajitas, complete with all of the fixings , right down to the chopped cilantro and onions, and all kinds of salsas and sauces. Would have fed 8, we were four (my wife, daughter, and mother in law).
We had leftovers for dinner tonight and we have enough fajita stuff for probably 2-3 more meals.

Long fuisilli with roasted cauliflower, anchovies, capers, olives, garlic, toasted pine nuts and Asiago , some parsley on top and backed by a Sicilian red. Buon appetito!

I made carnitas enchiladas, refried beans from scratch, and Mexican rice. My oldest daughter and my SIL came down -- it was a late Christmas celebration. It was all good.

Long family lore: have cabbage on NYD and for the rest of the year you'll always have money in your pocket. We had two different types of cabbage casserole.

Hey NSR, would you mind sharing your recipe for Mexican Rice? I'm not a recipe guy -- but yeah, I'll put together something. Give me a day or two.

Not a meal, but our tradition is to eat a dozen grapes at midnight, for luck. The grapes we got this year were huge and none of us wanted them, but we did it anyway.

Black-eyed peas and cornbread, same as every year for as long as I can remember. Pretty darn good on Jan 2,3 too.
