I was driving around this morning doing stuff and in the space of an hour I saw three SUVs with Christmas trees strapped to the roof. I say Christmas trees because that's my point of reference, but I guess to some people it's just a tree.
I can imagine many scenarios where families might defer the Christmas celebration to allow for a more opportune time for family members to get together -- I get that. But for me to see three in an hour the day after NYD -- I don't know.
Does anyone know of another tradition that uses dead trees as a decoration this time of year?
I do have friends who keep a Christmas tree up all year as part of their religious observance, but generally they aren't real trees.
Maybe they just like a bargain -- my wife will buy crap that she has absolutely no use for because it was 75% off.
Anyone have a guess?

Maybe they were headed to the Keys to burn more stuff.

Disposal? Maybe some trash companies won't pick them up.

Maybe one of those “come mulch your tree” events? A local tree removal service here is mulching/chipping old trees in return for donations to the local food bank.

Maybe one of those “come mulch your tree” events? A local tree removal service here is mulching/chipping old trees in return for donations to the local food bank. They always do it for charity around here, usually set up in the city owned parks. We do have curbside pickup of trees, but some people still elect to bring them in to be mulched.

We were away from home for the holidays this year so we are leaving our tree up until this weekend. Artificial tree but everyone thinks its real.

here in NJ shore area we have a tree drop off center in one of the parks. So we too have people with old/dead trees strapped to their car roofs The collection center takes them to the recycle center to turn into mulch. They don't want you to curbside them but they do have a tree pickup in January. Most dont want to wait and do the drop off. So its a very common sight here by me

In my town and most of the surrounding towns, we have curbside pick up for the trees -- it's part of the fee we pay for trash and recycling pick up -- so this explanation seems unlikely at least in my immediate area.
Whatever -- I was just curious if there was some other holiday out there that I was unaware of. Thanks for the replies.

......seeing all of the Christmas trees out for collection this week brings back a memory from my childhood: one particular year (after the Holidays) my friends and I collected several Christmas trees and left them in a heap on the ice of a local pond, noting the location.
When the ice melted in the spring the trees sank to the bottom and created a structure that held bait fish which in turn attracted large mouth bass. For the next several years we would always catch a few bass casting in the vicinity of our man (boy?) made structure.
Memories......
