Last year, when other car companies were faltering and shutting down production, Tesla soared ahead. One big reason: Tesla had its own supply chain and advanced software engineers. So when the all important computer chips they needed weren't available, they used other available chips instead, and had their engineers rewrite the software to adapt them. Ford, GM and the rest didn't have this capability; they had to rely on their outsourced suppliers and outsourced computing expertise.
In essence they had to get in line at the entrance, behind everyone else, while Tesla used a side door. Think of it through a pandemic lens: The Big 3, were outside the store, peering in through the supermarket windows, watching Elon Musk empty the shelves, since only he had the digital card to swipe at the side door.
Thinking outside the box. Good for the thinker, plus it shakes the competition out of the complacent mode of "we've always done it this way."
"Many car companies, including Ford and Mercedes-Benz, have said in recent months that they are hiring engineers and programmers to design their own chips and write their own software." NYT

And in 2021 during a down year, Toyota was accelerating and passed GM to take the top selling brand trophy. We knew it was going to happen, it was just a matter of time.
