Hey guys. I find the reverb in my Princeton to be a little extreme....boingy....I run it on max 2 and still get to much spring noise. I believe it has a 12ax7 tube. Can I replace with a T to lower the boing factor ? Its all boing and not enough swoosh ! My last amp was a Vibroking so you know Im fussy about my verb.

Upon further investigation I see the 12Au7 is the recommended mod. Any thoughts or experience on this issue ? Just want to calm the reverb attack a little.

A 12AU7 will reduce the 'space' in the reverb sound. It's worth a shot.

The reverb tank is the biggest variable / most likely weak point here, far more so than even the valves.

I finally changed the 12AT7 tube to a 12AU7 and it has solved my excessive boing factor. Sounds great. While I was in there I put that AT7 in the V1 slot. A little less gain. Not sure I like that yet. Time will tell. Thanks for the advice !

I've put a 12AY7 in one amp to give me more useable range and control on the low end of the gain control. It also works great in the PI position to do the same thing on the volume knob. Once you correct for the crunch/volume difference, there is no significant change in tone.

Was your 12AY7 of modern or vintage manufacture? I’d expect a vintage one to affect tone to some degree, as it has a much lower anode resistance than 12AX7. So the RC time constants in the anode circuit (tone stack, coupling cap, cathode decoupling etc) will be different. I’ve only got a very limited sample of 1 vintage 12AY7 so can’t be definitive, but it tends to make the amp’s tone brighter. Whereas who knows what a modern one’s characteristics really are? eg inside, it may just be a slightly altered 12AX7 etc. Just to note that a 12AY7 may not have much effect in V4 of a PR, which operates the phase splitter circuit, other than to stop the trem working. As one valve section is used for a cathodyne phase splitter (hence it doesn’t have any gain anyway), and the other section operates the trem oscillator, which may not oscillate if its gain is insufficient.
